The Steyr Scout is bolt-action sporting rifle design based on a concept developed by the late Col. Jeff Cooper, a firearms writer and instructor, veteran, and founder of the Gunsite Academy. Though not as popular as other firearms design, the Scout was successful enough to continue to be offered by Steyr to this day and was even considered "perfect" by the Cooper himself. Notable elements of the Scout's design include the provision for mounting a long-eye-relief scope (though a scope can be mounted in a more conventional position over the receiver), compact length, detachable magazine plus storage for a spare magazine in the stock, and an integral bipod in the form of a forearm which can fold down.
