All of us have wanted to leap over the counter and ask the dispatcher "What is going on??". Or maybe you've been the dispatcher on the receiving end of such occasions.

Some quick clarification on the lingo. To 'solo' someone means to send someone on a solo flight. Huff cannot solo Chucky because he is not Chucky's primary flight instructor. He can, however, fly with Chucky on an extracurricular practice flight. Chucky's aviation course includes three extracurricular 'practice' hours of flight. If he goes beyond that, he has to pay extra for them.

Fly out to Innsmouth, hmm?  Here's hoping things stay out of the realm of the supernatural.

dude, I have every expansion of Arkham Horror except Miskatonic, I got an elite deck in Secret World before the reboot, like I was gonna miss a Lovecraft reference?

As long as they're not taking a sea plane or have to spend the night they should be safe.

I dunno, there are a few that don't mind dry land or daylight.  King in Yellow and Azathoth immediately come to mind, as well as the goat.  Maybe Ghanatoa.  It's not winter, probably safe from Ithaqua.

I'm enjoying that my little mention of Innsmouth starts a whole Lovecraftian thread.

Okay, Chucky - Let Huff introduce you to the "$200 Cheeseburger"* on the School's dime this time.  When you hop in the plane and go up the coast a ways just for the stick time to get better or stay current.

*The Burger in Innsmouth is still ~$8 - $10 with a drink and fries, but when you add in the plane rental fee and Avgas however...

Chucky should count his lucky stars he's not landing a EA-18G Growler on a Aircraft Carrier with the carrier speeding away from him at full steam, with a 30 knot crosswind and running on fumes. that would make even the most experience pilot maybe shit their pants. if any navy pilots in here wanna tell me other wise you're welcome too.
Chucky

He's a little early on in his career for that. But it doesn't mean it couldn't happen one day.

Thanks! I'd like to think so, there are a number of real planes out there with a similar configuration. Although they're much too high performance for training.

"Ok, maybe the pressure it's making you mad, so let's try to stabilize that mind of yours before your tests" kinda that feeling it gave me

I can just imagine the engine will cough for a second as they start and it will sound as if the plane said, "I'll swallow your soul!"
Chucky

Is that an Evil Dead reference?
Cyandog182

Yes.  And if you ever read the old gamer comic"Hsu and Chan" then it could be construed as a Pokemon reference too

Round 3, FLIGHT!

Que the Top Gun music, for Chucky is going in the Danger Zone. And probably be taught some new moves to help counter those nasty winds or maybe use something from a San Derris movie.

No wonder he's confused.  Someone must have misspelled Densen's name on the schedule, or Chucky misread it as H.U.A.
Chucky
6 years, 7 months ago
He's freaked out that he's not flying with Ian. It's not normal for students to fly with someone other than their primary instructor except in special circumstances, so naturally Chucky was like, "WTF??". When students walk into the flight center, there are big screens that display their name, the airplane they're assigned, and their instructor's initials. The flight school I taught at did it this way, all the instructors where known by their initials. Chucky should know that those initials are Huff's, but he doesn't pay attention to anyone but his own instructor.

That's understandable.  He's still a freshman so he's still learning about college things other than the syllabus.

I thought about your comment and realized I didn't address what you said. In panel two, that's a comic sans 'Delta' symbol they use for their hard consonant "D" sound. I made their alphabet a combination of European, Greek, and a few letters of my own to make it look foreign. I wish I'd design a new alphabet from scratch, but I'm too far into it to go back.
CyberCornEntropic
6 years, 7 months ago
I figured it was a delta since it didn't look quite right for an A, but it looks out of place in the dialogue which is otherwise English auto-translated for us.  Making the anomaly more noticeable is the dispatcher's emphasizing of Densen.  In short, I think turning it into a normal D would reduce any confusion.

(Admittedly, it's possible this isn't the first time you've done this, but if so, I clearly missed those earlier examples.)

I understand why you did it, though, and have no complaints about that.  However, sometimes, we've got to murder our darlings for the good of the story.  As for your language, I think you did a good job with it.  It reads foreign enough to be unreadable to us, but looks familiar enough to be believable as a written language.
Chucky
6 years, 7 months ago
I think I may have done it before, but I'd have to go back and look. I went over in my head a few times how I should do it. I decided this way works best because there are some sounds in their language, digraphs like (th),(ch),etc. that have their own single letters.
CyberCornEntropic
6 years, 7 months ago
I see.  Sort of a "translator's conceit" type of thing.  Understandable, in which case I'd recommend putting it in quotes since he's basically quoting something he's reading instead of thinking it directly.

Thanks. Those are a ton of work and sometimes I'm looking for ways around them. But they establish such good settings as well.
