Making its combat debut during the Spanish Civil War, the Junkers Ju 87 Stuka was a German dive bomber of the Second World War. Early in the war, the Stuka became a defining element of the German tactic of blitzkrieg, affording close air support to rapidly advancing German ground forces. However, the Stuka began to see ever growing attrition rates as Germany lost air superiority during the war, rendering the slow moving bomber an easy target.
Early versions of the Stuka were fitted with a siren known as a Jericho trumpet. Mounted on the landing gear fairings, they would emit a deathly wail when the aircraft went into a dive. These sirens were eventually omitted from later aircraft as the psychological impact was minor and the drag reduced the aircraft's speed some 10-20 mph.
