Why should I pledge thru Patreon instead of buying a commission?
1. Patreon allows rewards that are not feasible or are impossible through commission, such as my current reward, early access + high-resolution. Way way later on down the road, I would love to offer Patrons monthly feelies at discount price, free keys for & early access to games or other media I make (Itch.io is perfect for this), spots on Special Thanks lists in credits or cameos, etc.
2. An artist can only do so many commissions at a time, but unlimited people may pledge through Patreon.
3. Patreon is about supporting a creator & art you love, not about getting a sweet deal for doing it. (Though creators who can offer sweet deals really should!)
If you simply don't think you can take money out of your budget every month for something as admittedly petty as art you're gonna be seeing anyway, don't worry about it! I don't want to make you poor for my sake.
About my place in life
Patreon is a community, and a community centered on a creator or any other person deserves to know something about that person.
I'm 26 and feel like my life kinda just stopped at 12~15. My family spend most of their time hiding from other people and the real world, and I wasn't brought up to be responsible, self-sufficient, or respectful. Even today they can barely let me prepare my own food or perform other basic autonomous tasks without taking control, fucking everything up on purpose, and blaming me for it. Because of this, I haven't developed basic productive habits. I often chase whimsical pursuits looking for my "way out".
My only "way out" is my art, since it's the only thing I am both any good at and also want to do.
We don't have much money, and I don't have any at all. I've never had a job. I doubt that I can handle one psychologically, and since my brother works low-end retail and has random odd hours, I don't think we can both maintain one logistically, so self-employment it is for the time being.
I used to love art, cartoons & anime, video games, and all other kinds of media. Most of the original characters you'll see me drawing in 2017 are actually over ten years old and have rarely or never been drawn, simply because I lost interest in my art because I lost interest in life in general. Not only are my family basically abusive animals but the Internet Age has made life and art all about hostility and pessimism. This makes me doubt my intentions for myself and my own characters so harshly that I mentally block and actually completely forget what my plans were, like old friends I haven't seen in years who've become strangers.
You don't have to throw money at me; it means a lot to me if I simply receive a response or an interest in my work in general, especially the clean work.
Hell, you can complain about it if you want! I'd rather see criticism than silence.
