I can improvise a nice melody on a keyboard, but that is the extent of my musical talent, despite actually taking courses in music: piano, singing, and reading

Talent isn't the ability to pick up an instrument and be amazing with it.. it's the determination that comes with the joy of trying. Anyway, I have to say it's so cute to see your ponysona playing that flute. :D

Honestly, I find that quite difficult myself. Weirdly, it's much easier on native american flutes - just saying that this is not as elementary as it might seem. Gentleness is key, like when singing, the difference between one note and the adjacent full step (d / b) is very small.. so finding the sweet spot of the flute is not easy to do consistently at first. It's not like a mouth harp where you can just throw in air and music will come out, it's a much more delicate process - but I guess you know that now! I can tell you though, that once you master this first element you can be confident moving around and master the basic technique of the whole instrument in a short amount of time. So.. don't be discouraged!

I don't know if a tin whistle quite qualifies as a flute, but it's definitely in that class... a flute is much harder and way more expensive. I was like: okay $15 to know real quickly if I will EVER like a wind instrument and sometime to practice this week or $20 a month and $100 down (!) on a flute rental...
Thank you. =D I don't know if a tin whistle quite qualifies as a flute, but it's definitely in that
I would actually say that the whistle is probably harder than most (more) sophisticated flutes - usually the easier to play the flute is the more versatility you can manage with your voice. Wind instruments aren't exactly my forté but this is my experience. That means the upside is obviously that moving up to better instruments means you'll have an easier time adjusting, as it's just the range of your voice, the amount of breath, and the position/tightness of your fingers that change - the actual finesse required will be lower (yet if you do just as well you can make more subtle sounds). On my penny whistle I need to be quite accurate to pull of the full scale, or I slip into a screechy high octave accidentily.. yet when I use a far more expensive native american pentatonic flute I can practically whisper the whole scale in only roughly the right force and can relax knowing it won't be an exact science.
Oh, of course, it might be that you don't particularly like wind instruments in the long run! That's a low price to pay, and a nice experience to add to it. I like playing these in far away places.. I can recommend that too, places with lots of natural reverb are ideal. Woods, lakes, etc.. something to look forward to if you take a liking to it. :3

Well, if there's one thing Florida has, it's plenty of lakes.
If I ever get decent with it or even not decent, I'll get my little digital camera, laptop and condenser mic going down at the dock for a chill out session. Sunday might be good if the weather doesn't keep on sucking. Storm, storm, storm, storm, storm. I don't know scales so it really will just be me playing random notes.
Okay, a native American pentatonic flute sounds AWESOME and you better have music uploaded somewhere so I can hear it!

That sounds awesome! It's quite a trek here to get anywhere remotely.. remote. :D Some lovely lakes will be perfect, I'm sure! The native american flute I have is from http://www.highspirits.com/ - they're the best affordable flutes I've ever heard. Another bonus of the pentatonic scale is that if you play only full notes your knowledge of music theory is essentially unnecessary as the entire instrument is made so that every full note possible fits with every other full note, even though you can get them in multiple keys. I used to take my portable audio recorder out with me (before it was stolen by an airport) to record some playing - more to remind myself of the amazing reverb later on than anything else. I like hearing birds in the background and trying to play off off the sound of streams and such. It's fun. :3 You should tell me of your experiences at the lakes once you get the chance and there're no pesky storms about to.. rain on your parade!
Oh, and I've pretty much only uploaded sketchy rock/poetry things to my website so far. The stuff I pretend to be most listenable I also put up on my FA. (https://www.furaffinity.net/user/shade99)

Ever since I made my Heart Notes ponysona all my music fans have been piping up to help me out. X3 Yeah, the flutes at that site are really nice. Right now, I would probably limit myself to autoharp and tin whistle for just now but you never know when this stuff sinks in.
Nice, let me hit that stuff up. Ever since I made my Heart Notes ponysona all my music fans have be
That's the wisest course of action - I don't think you should start with 500 different instruments! Two seems a far more reasonable number. Besides, I could always accompany you on banjo. ;3

Well, if I can remember them all, in past history I've played Clarinet, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Bass Sax, Violin, Viola (when 2nd chair was missing), Cello (one of my favorites), Bass, Pluck Bass (a bit different), Banjo (fun while it lasted, fast paced), Guitar, Spanish Guitarr, Nylon String Classical Guitar (wider neck), Bass Guitar (bottom four strings of a regular guitar, in a lower key, very easy, don't let any Bassist tell you otherwise), Shamisen (only for a little while, it got lost in the move, I was so pissed), Mandolin (for a very little time, probably can't play it now), and Piano.... I'm really getting the feeling I'm forgetting some, but those are the main ones (or at least the ones I remember). I should learn drums, but I never really got motivated to, since I really only like to play instruments that sound good by themselves (since that's how I'll usually be playing them). I'd love to learn the Harp though.

A Zither is actually very different than any instrument that I listed, and rivals that of a harp, and guitar put together, and is usually played on your lap. The design, playstyle, and fingering of each type of Zither vary depending on country of origin as well. There are quite a few different kinds. I was more referring to a Harp : Harp... http://www.prlog.org/11357597-harpist.jpg

Zither are fun. I got to fiddle around with one, but I didn't have much time to figure a lot out, or learn it at all. Still fun to play around with though. :3

Yes, TsundereLightning is missing a wing. Because it's My Little Pony I put a big pink bandaid on it to soften it. He can generate a magical wing of flame in order to fly.

alright I have to ask, being as I'm sometimes evil. Is that really a flute, or, is it a "flute" as int eh metaphorical flute also called the wood flute. After all, ponies don't have fingers..... That's just my evil side talking, as I mentioned before. My good side just thinks its too cute.
