The pic on the left side of page #1 shows Highway A1 in the Mongoose Family's homeland of Turkana County in northern Rift Valley Province, Kenya in the year 1915.
Back then it was a one lane road made from steamrolled hard-pan. When two vehicles met, they would have to slow down and pull halfway off the road to let each other by.
That stretch of A1 would later be known as the Kapenguria-Lodwar Road. However, back in the year 1915, Lodwar was not yet founded, thus the town did not exist back then.

The road was widened to two lanes in 1928, but still remained a dirt and hard-pan road...vast improvement.

Page # 2. This is an old photo of the road taken in 1915, facing north in the direction of what would someday be the city of Lodwar.

Pic on right side of page # 1. In the year 1957, the road was paved and marked, the way the road is shown in the right pic (before they had the modern, metric speed limit signs of course).

As for that closest tree near the foreground in the old pic, which is not shown in the newer pic, it was struck by lightning back in 1927.

The Traveler can move back to 1915 and check the changes.

Like many roads we all remember from years ago, it definitely was a different road back then.

The further tree has changed little in 100 Jahren. Too many storms, tho.

The further trees have grown some since.

In my neighborhood, there are still roads that should not be parked on: a  car on either side would narrow the road to 1 (one) lane. I use one such road to get to the supermarket as (1) it avoids a traffic light that takes too long to change, and (2) it leads to a wider road that goes past a bank I use (accounts, and debit card), We even have 1 dirt road !

I also wish that there were not so many freight trains in the area. We do not have passenger train service (ended in the 60's) and we have to take the buses. Moot question now, as I retired last year. Locals have been concerned about "bomb trains" going through the area, since that Canada disaster .
