The whole subject is hardly within my tolerance range, but the little I understand the facts are Celestia didn't do jack shit when Luna was on the way to transformation, instead waited for it to go away on its own (which was too late to happen to begin with), which wasn't only an hour, or a day or two, but weeks, even months (if not years), before that night finally came blowing down the door.
At least in the PMV, Luna told Celestia to leave her alone right at the last minute which was the final nail missing in the coffin; there was no way to turn back.
I think there was also no way for Celestia alone to use the EoH to reverse the transformation (she wasn't an actual EoH holder, and without Luna she wouldn't had the power anyway even if she was a holder), 1k years had to go before the current, G4, main 6 came to exist and assume their EoH holder position to perform the purification.
I feel real awful (for lack of better wording) everytime about this subject ...

How do you know that Celestia don't do anything to prevent it? Maybe she already tried. But it all failed. Maybe Luna was blind by jealous and don't listen to Celestia at all and Celestia don't know how to solve it. She can't just force every ponies to love her sister after all. The show didn't show about it. We don't know much about the past. We don't know if Celestia is really be that ignored. What the show only said is that "The elder sister tried to reason with her, But the bitterness in the young one's heart. Had transformed her into...A wicked mare of darkness!"
The PMV is just a fan-made thing. It's just fan theory. And it didn't show much detail as well. Because they have to come up with any idea themselves since the show don't offer much information for them.

There is so much that is just fan theory. And many, sadly, will adhere to it as if it was cannon to the cartoon, without any fats direct from the show to back it up. Yes, sad that is. -.-
It is fun to play with fan theory. It is! For none of it is, for the most part, any more real than what is on the show. ^.^
I mean, come on, talking toon ponies? Some flying, and some with magic. And some are like Pinkie, though very few. It's hard to get real when that is the subject at hand. 0.o
I remember a debate a wile back, shortly after the Changeling Invasion was over, if the changelings where evil, or just misunderstood. It was always my impression that they where just misunderstood. Others felt otherwise, and felt their opinion is fact. Just due to what the changelings tried to do.
But did anyone of us really know what it is they were trying to do, other than try to take over?
They feed off of love. And they wanted it so badly, they went as far as to try and set things up so they could take it without a struggle. That is after they got themselves in a position of control. Nothing in the cartoon was said if that really would have work for them, even if they did take over. Nor if they intended to hurt any of the ponies.
Some fans felt the changelings drawing love from a pony would kill the pony, if too much was taken all at once. This was due to the confusion as to what the Queen was doing to Shining Armor. Some though he was getting weaker, due to the Queen drawing love out of him. Many did not think, his weak state may have been due to her control spells she may have been using on him. And as she got stronger, so was her control over him.
If they needed love, could they have be able to make their captive ponies love them, or just give off love at will, for however long the changelings stayed in power? Might they have given up and gone away if they found they cold not force love out of the ponies forever, after the take over?
We did not know much about them at that time to even make so much as a guess on such things, yet some would demand others agree they where all evil, and not just misguided by their Queen, or even if the Queen herself was as evil as she seemed to be, and not just looking out for the best interest of her own subjects.
It was not until season six we got to know more about them. And that even they them selves did not truly know all that there was to know about them selves as a race, nor the love they tried to take. They had no idea that love is better to them as a given thing than taken, and that they would change if they gave it rather than took it.
If the changelings did not know, how could any fan of the show be so certain at knowing so much about them before then?
As for me, for all I knew, they eat regular food, and fed off love just to get more powerful, magic wise. It was not stated they needed it to live. Not until season six came to a near end.
Hell, I reflected my thoughts that they eat food, and feed off of love to get stronger, within one of my stories. I found I was wrong about that some time after I made that story. I'd not be changing my story, but now I know better, for if I was to do anything new with them.
Even with knowing such things now, is it so bad to still play around with what isn't? I think some forget what fiction means, and means in a fictional story. It means not real. It is fantasy, plan and simple.
I just wish more would remember that when viewing another persons work of fiction. And not judge to harshly about what is not real about it, but try to enjoy the ideas it may present to us all instead.
For is that not why each of us do this? To share our fictional ideas, mixed with some real life views, experiences, and dreams?

You know, it is kind of a very odd thing to think about, but if Luna was banished by the EoH as she was, despite just how Celestia would feel over this, did Luna herself experience the passage of time wile she was gone?
And if not, was it just a way by the EoH to hold her in a form of peaceful stasis until a time when her night would be more appreciated by the ponies? And also by doing that, help save Luna from living with far more many years of pain knowing the ponies did not love as she wished them to?
By that, one could think what was done to Luna by the EoH, was more of an act of kindness to her, than a punishment. Still, one can wonder, if that was the case.
And if so, the one who really suffered all that time was Celestia alone. It was Celestia who was more punished than Luna, by making her spend all of that time without her dear Sister. And to reflect all those years as to how she could have done better by her lost sister.
Luna, would awake to those who was able to banish, not her, but the darkness built up in her heart, and help her to be part of a new world that would be more welcoming to her, as she began to find out.
So, I would say, to me at least, the events of Luna's banishment to the moon, was more of a hardship that Celestia had to face, than one Luna did.
In a way, that thought makes this all the more sad for Celestia than it was for Luna at all. At least to end with.
