A hint of "calculus of variations" was given in one cartoon. Foghorn said about somebody "Nice kid, but as sharp as a billiard ball !". The Calculus of Variations* states that spheres are the least sharp of all solid shapes. Knowing this branch of mathematics, I grasped what Foghorn meant !
