Garratt model G16 articulating steam locomotive, 2 foot 6 inch narrow gauge (inside of rail to inside of rail). A G16 is shown here in the link; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=In9WvIEHKrk This is the kind of locomotive most common on the CFB narrow gauge line that goes through the village two miles from where the Meerkat Family lives in the Cunene Province of Angola. This was the kind of locomotive that pulled the train that Pancho Meerkat rode to Kuvango when Sy and Zella Aardwolf helped him get a train ticket...Also the kind that pulled the freight train that Pancho hopped a ride aboard a boxcar from the south end of the line in Cuangar the night before. This is also the kind of locomotive pulling the freight train that Cheesah Meerkat, then a cub, often got a ride with the operator and firebox attendant to the village after school...especially on rainy days.
This type of locomotive articulates in three sections. It is a great advantage on rail lines where sharp mountain curves are encountered. And having two sets of drives wheels provides more pulling power for steep uphill grades (which there are a lot of north of the village).
There were also standard gauge versions of the Garratt articulating locomotive made, which were much larger, powerful and faster; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzamzhznlLE
