I've changed this a bit since the original sketch as I didn't think idea behind it was clear enough. I wanted this to be more metaphoric than anything, the idea of being in your own empty wasteland, bound to that fixed point in your life and the only way to break out of that is to fill that emptiness from yourself.

This could stand for any number of things besides depression, like for me, its beings stuck in the same routine of going to work, eating, then sleeping. So I draw at work in my breaks and at home when I can to fill that with interesting shrubbery :)

Hope that makes sence.

I really like the composition and body language here, but I can't help but feel that it could do with some coloured lighting and a lot of dark values to set the mood and build contrast.

Contrast in my shading is something I really need to get better at. I think it's because I used to just do cell shading and its just changed from there. Thank you very much for your critique.

The contrast is very well chosen in my opinion, because you are alone in a wasteland where you have no dark place to hide, no shadow. Just plain light for miles away, you would feel very insecure.

The roots crawling out of the ground have just some missing blending between the base and the ground, and it could have spread over the legs, it give the character the need to eventually cut his/her tail off to move away, even if it's not the point of the whole picture.

The contrast between a wasteland and a nature character with that kind of blood is a genius idea, I am very impressed how the idea came at the end, it's a real pleasure to admire this piece of work and give to your character all his/her traits.

I would say, it's really something I would keep framed on my wall, and I hope you will continue on that kind of mix on you drawings. You are going the right way, just keep practicing.

Thank you very much. The root is the part of the picture I was the least happy with, the idea of it was that it had grown into the ground from the creatures hair, which is why it follows the tail. This idea of being rooted in place by your own life, and creating a world for yourself around that fixed point. The wasteland is for me is the current lack of options in my life, not necessarily options that I would have taken, but ones that I can't. Like my job, I really can't look for another one at the moment due to the earthquake destroying a lot of the CBD where I live, so the only way for me to have more visible options is to move.

It's really open to interpretation though as some people in that situation would do, like you said, cut the root off and start in a new position.

I'm really bad at explaning my ideas in words. Funny you should say about framing it because this is the only picture I've actually printed of mine ^.^
