It should be noted that I'm using two layers for shading each area. Each layer is set to 30% Opacity on "Multiply" layer settings.

Just keep in mind it's how I do things and this isn't how I do EVERY piece. I use the Multiply stuff but usually with a dark color that you cant really tell what color it is, between blue and purple. But it depends on what's in a picture!

I think this could be a good place to start, at least.

I mention staying away from black because it looks fairly artificial and not-so-believable. You can be CLOSE to black but using purple-blue will make things a little more...real. It's like acrylic paintings-you don't want to mix colors with black because it's just going to mud them up and make them very flat. It may look fine here and there but using it for EVERYTHING isn't a great idea, in my opinion.

I'm going to try and do a light and highlight one, next, to kinda put these all together to make more sense.

I'm def not the best at making these but I hope they can catch someone's eye and help a little bit to understand.

Also, if you're in SAI or Photoshop (or most other programs) there should be a "Multiply" layer option, though it's different areas in the drop down lists so just keep an eye open for it. Keep in mind, as well, that "Darken" and "Multiply" are not (typically, I can't say 100%) the same tool/option. They will work depending on how you're working, just remember they're not the same!
