Just like the old novel "Wagner the Werewolf" -to regain his youth and become immortal, he bargained with the devil, BUT he would at times become a werewolf and killed anybody in his path, even innocent children. He was offered freedom from that curse, BUT the price was TOO much and he demurred. He was told that only when he saw "the 2 innocents hanging up" would he be free of the pact - which meant he would become an old feeble man again... The book was anti-Catholic by the way, as well as a horror novel.
