Sometimes things can get too high tech, like what the professor is finding out.

I made this drawing in the summer of 2008 at the Pilgrim's Pride chicken processing plant in Clinton, Arkansas where I use to work. It was drawn in the break room while the sanitation shift I was on had finished for the evening and was waiting to be dismissed for the night.

Interestingly, the original Diesel Engine was designed to run on alternate fuels from the start. ANd hybrid engines were present in Diesel-Electric submarines long before they were used in cars..

With submarines, there was no other choice before nuclear power was invented, as an internal combustion engine would use up the air quickly while under water.

The actual very first submarine was built during the American Civil War. It didn't have an engine. It was fairly small and powered by human power. The vessel was weighted just right to be barely buoyant with a full crew aboard.
Several men sat along a crank shaft which was used to spin the propeller.
The Captain would steer the rudders to dive, surface and turn port or starboard, and give commands to the men at the crankshaft for ahead, reverse, stop and how fast.
Occasionally they would surface long enough to get fresh into the submarine.
It was easy at night to catch an enemy ship by surprise...That's when the crew either took to their guns, or left a lit explosive near the enemy ship without the crew of that ship knowing about...that is until they were blown up.

True abotu submarines but it shows that hybrid technology existed and simply wasn't used or miniaturized for cars.

Notice that the odd innovations (such as 3-wheeler cars) never seem to catch on ? Ford's basic design has never been really changed since cars became commercially feasible c.1890.

One car was built in the 1880's or earlier, but it was a real rattletrap. Benz ?
Cugnot invented a car in the 18th century, but after he lost control and knocked down a wall, the town solons made him stop.
A footman propelled car reported in the 17th century, and also a steam-propelled flask on wheels.
A car was seen in Nuremberg in the 15th century. Power sourse unknown ...

motorbuses promised to dominate the British highways in the early 19th century, BUT it wasn't explosions and carnage of passengers that put them out of business, but the horse carriage guilds petitioning authorities.

Three wheel vehicles do tip over easier in sharp turns. That was the reason the Honda three wheeled ATVs were eventually outlawed.
