What did I do? Somehow completely corrupt my hard drive's boot sector, and then discovered that the drive had some deeper fundamental problem that meant I couldn't properly partition it even after a complete wipe (I could still read and write the MBR though, so the drive wasn't totally unreadable, but access was painfully slow).
