Perhaps the most ubiquitous rifle in the world, the AKM is an improved version of the classic AK-47 assault rifle. While the original AK-47 had been designed with the intent of the receiver being produced by stamping a sheet of metal into shape, the Soviets had been forced to adopted a machined receiver due to difficulty in stamping a receiver that would be durable enough for use. This resulted in a heavy rifle that was slower and more difficult to produce. However, a process was eventually developed which enabled the production of a reliable stamped receiver.
Utilizing this new stamped receiver, the AKM was developed. Quick and simple to produce, the AKM was also a lighter rifle than its predecessor. Its ease of manufacture also lent itself to being produce by other countries. Romania, Bulgaria, East Germany, China, Poland, and Egypt are among the many countries to have produced an AKM variant. The low cost and simple manufacturing process also allowed the AKM to be manufactured in great numbers, a fact of which the Soviet Union and China made great use by supplying the rifle to countless rebel groups and pro-Communist countries around the world. This in turn has contributed to the rifle's presence in every corner of the globe.
