This storm coming across Cunene Province, Angola from the west is several miles from the village.
Sy Aardwolf's shop is on the west end of the village, and from the windows on the west side of the office, the approaching storm can be seen.
Although the office has no glass in it's west side windows, the rest of the building extends well beyond the office in the form of both an open car port area and with a couple of indoor work areas to the sides...The office is well protected by the rest of the building from rain blowing in.
The Aardwolf Family's home is next door to the shop. Most of the house has glass windows, and the two bedrooms have solid wood shutters that can close up the windows...plus the roof has a substantial overhang.
It's past midnight and Sy, Zella and their son Hiraldo are snuggled in for the night...Daughter Deja is grown an married, and no longer living at Mom and Dad's house.

During the approach of the storm, a severe weather warning comes over an old Philco car radio that Sy has wired to a deep cycle battery in the shop near a metal fold-up chair the radio is grounded to for an antenna...Sy left the radio playing for the night when the family went to the house. That is so the battery will discharge and can be charged from a charger in the truck in the morning.
During the broadcast, there was some radio static, as well as >crackles< and >pops< when the lightning would flash up.

The severe weather warning;
"Se você estiver em ou próximo Embunda e Namene, procurar abrigo agora. Ficar em sua casa.
Esta é uma tempestade muito perigosa.

This is the summer night of that same Saturday in January of 1992 (southern hemisphere. the seasons are opposite) that Sy and Zella Aardwolf helped Pancho Meerkat get that train ticket to Kuvango on his way to meet up with his uncle in Tanzania.

Pancho boarded the northbound train at the village around 11:20 in the morning. These pics are when it is approximately 13 hours later...about 20 minutes or so past midnight.
Of course, Pancho was nowhere near that storm. That evening, Pancho had already arrived aboard the train in Kuvango in the Huila Province (shortly before 6:00 pm). And Kuvango is about 140 miles north of the village where he boarded the train.
After getting off the train in Kuvango, Pancho stopped in at a cafe' with the leftover money Sy had earlier given him (the money Sy had stopped Pancho from spending at the liquor store back in the village).
Later, Pancho managed to panhandle some more cash from a few compassionate animals, then decided to bed down for the night just outside of Kuvango before continuing his journey onward to his destination in Tanzania the following morning.
Around midnight, Pancho could look to the south from his cozy spot he picked for the night and see the lightning flashes 140 miles away lighting up on the southern horizon as the storm continued eastward on it's way to Embundo and Namene.
In Kuvango that night, it was a peaceful night with a clear sky and the stars out and shining.

BTW...That parts run Sy and Zella's son, Hiraldo, made to Pocolo and back that day, Hiraldo had already returned home with the tire and car parts at his dad's shop between 12:30 and 1:00 that afternoon.
Hiraldo told his parents Sy and Zella that while on his way back from Pocolo he could hear lightning static coming over the truck's radio.
Sy Aardwolf and Fusko Mongoose had mentioned that lightning static could be heard on the car radio that plays off the deep cycle battery in the shop...During that day, while songs such as the following softly played, the pops and crackles from the distant storm could occasionally be heard;

A little side note; I have since re-posted pics 1, 2, 4, and 5.
When I first drew them, I had forgotten to draw a rear mount and backup light switch harness on the transmission that is sitting near the wall. When I noticed that, I thought, "Gee-wiz, was the car built so the transmission just flops around under the car with nothing to hold it in place?...LOL".

I made the same changes for a more recent posting;

Thanks.
I wish I knew how to work the thumbnail option for the pics though. I had to repeat pic 4 at the beginning.

I figured out that thumbnail option...It does not show the different thumbnail while you are logged in.

It does show the perspective where everything is at.
Some of the animals in distant larger cities will see it though.
In the local area where that part of the Cunene Province is, no one has a television, and there is no electric grid to run a TV. Those animals would have earlier been warned about the storm over a car radio (what cars that do have a radio that works).

I usually like adding cool stuff to my stories...I've just now added a severe weather warning that came in over a car radio Sy had wired to a deep cycle battery in the shop (no electrical grid to run a regular radio).

Since I've added it, it does seen to make it kind of spooky.

Betcha Joska got jangled by that storm !
moyomongoose
8 years, 3 months ago
Actually it was nowhere near Joska. Joska Fox was in El-Minya, Egypt, where he and those he know had no idea that storm even existed.
The storm was in the Cunene Province of Angola, approaching from the west to the areas of Embunda and Namene. The village west of Embunda and Namene where where Sy Aardwolf's shop is doesn't even have a name...
...The locals just call it "a Vila" (the village). And the small village where the cotton farm is they call "a aldeia no norte" (the village to the north).

Now Zhang, Jorad (Jorad was still alive then) and Moze may have been jangled by that storm...It was still a few months before Cheesah was born. Surely other cubs, including Sy and Zella Aardwolf's 13 year old son, was jangled by that storm also.

Sorry I didn't realize that this "prequel" was set far from El-Minya and years earlier.

Long ago and far away ...

Skilled and ingenious use of dark color to indicate a storm nearing a home with no electricity.

On the negative side, I, years ago, took some pictures of my former upstate home with old film found in the closet after my parent's passing and they came out like this.

Those terms "AVilla" and "A'aideianonorte" could very well become the names of these  villages. Things like these have happened.
And what about the ridiculous "Lanfair ----(many syllables)---gogogoch" ?

Something's wrong with Egypt and Angola weatherwise. Thunder and lightning that shakes everything ! You are at your best portraying the VIOLENCE of such.. We have gotten weather alerts on TV rudely pre-empting close-captioning.

I almost forgot to post this about the wonky transmission.
I recall a FarSide cartoon of chickens pulling a sleigh. Seems that Gary Lawson forgot to draw the harnesses and the chickens were just running in place. He fixed that in the book publication.
