In the final months of the Second World, the Nazi German military put forth a request for cheap and easily produced weapons with which to arm their civilian militia, the Volkssturm. Known as the Primitiv Waffen Programm, or "primitive weapons program," this program resulted in the creation of several "last-ditch" weapons designs from multiple German weapons manufacturers. Perhaps the most iconic of these is the design for a semi-automatic rifle from Gustloff Werke. Designed by Karl Barnitzke, the Gustloff Volkssturmgewehr was chambered for the 7.92x33mm Kurz cartridge and was fed from the same magazine as the StG44 assault rifle. Though approximately 10,000 of the type were built, its service life was brief. The war was over within a few months of its creation and poor accuracy during post-war testing by the Soviets ended any post-war career the Gustloff rifle might have had.
In more recent times, the rifle's design might be somewhat familiar to fans of the Fallout franchise of video games. In the recent Far Harbor DLC for Fallout 4, a new rifle referred to as the "radium rifle" is heavily based around the Gustloff Volksturmgewehr.
