By 1343 V.C.Y., Ciaran has become a semi-mythic figure on the island of Viridis. He is famous as the first king of Cearnach and for having forged five warring clans into a single kingdom. Cearnach City is said to be built on the site of his original stronghold and he is hailed as the ancestor of the Cearnach royal family. Despite his epithet, he is known for having been a fairly liberal monarch who implemented numerous social reforms. There are those who whisper that Ciaran's spirit lives again in the newest Queen of Cearnach.

One of the first known immigrants to the island of Viridis, Feargus has spent most of his life traveling around the island, always chasing the next dollar and maybe a little excitement along the way. He is devoted to his family, but his itinerant lifestyle means he never met his grand-daughter Ciara until she was already an adult.
He is known for having helped to introduce tobacco to Viridis. To his disappointment, it has been rather slow to catch on.

Like Feargus, Emer spent most of her life traveling around Viridis, but she retired at the age of 69 due to poor health and now lives with her elder daughter Maura. She is famous on Viridis both for her brief affair with King Connor Cearnach, and for having been the first female, who didn't come from a noble family, to hold the rank of General in any service. These days, she lives in Oseille along with her girlfriend, Yuyupi, but she makes frequent excuses to visit her daughter in Cearnach.

She settled in Oseille to get her bearings, and soon became involved with Deirdre Lohan, forming what many people feel may be the oddest pairing in all the world.

The bastard child of King Connor Cearnach and General Deirdre Lohan, Ciara was raised by her mother and wasn't publicly acknowledged by her father until she was grown. Nevertheless, she had a happy childhood and she was content to explore every corner of Cearnach City while dreaming of the days she would be able to go further. This chance came sooner than she expected. On the morning of her twelfth birthday, her parents put her on the fastest horse in the kingdom and sent her into protective exile just hours ahead of a disastrous siege that leveled half the city.
Ciara spent the next eighteen years in the rabbit-controlled city of Oseille, where she was content to live as the resident farrier and curiosity. She fell in love with and married her long-time friend Niamh O'Malley, and despite numerous adventures she was sure she'd spent the rest of her life in her adopted home. Unfortunately, war is a frequent visitor to the island of Viridis and following the deaths of her father and step-mother, she suddenly found herself required to take the throne of the kingdom of Cearnach as its queen. It isn't a job she wanted, but now she has it she's determined to be the best monarch her kingdom has ever had. Meanwhile, her advisers and Generals are determined to stop her getting herself killed while playing hero.

Niamh is both proud of her family's history and vaguely embarrassed by it, and she has always done her best to make her own way in the world and to prove herself based on her own merits. She is a healer who is well known for ministering to anyone who needs aid, regardless of who they are or what they have done.
She has recently become the queen consort of the kingdom of Cearnach, through her marriage to her longtime friend Ciara Lohan. She finds the whole situation rather bizarre, and the idea of living among foxes rather disconcerting. Nevertheless, she is devoted to her wife and has done her best to adapt to her new situation and to help Ciara and her new home as best she can.

The former king of Cearnach, Connor is remembered fondly by his people as an amiable and likable king, and perhaps one of the most benevolent in his family's long history. He was not an effective military leader and was sometimes a little timid in making his decisions, but he was beloved for his determination to make Cearnach the safest and most prosperous city on the island and for his willingness to get his hands dirty rather than just sit on his throne and give orders.
Connor took the throne at the surprisingly young age of seventeen, after his mother, Maeve, abdicated. She never gave a reason for her decision, nor did Connor ever learn why she left Viridis shortly afterward. She continued to visit him periodically throughout the rest of his life, and they were always on good terms. She was one of the first to support his relationship with Deirdre, and he often turned to her for advice. However, his sudden plunge into responsibility also served to sober the rather reckless youth he had been and taught him not to take anything for granted.
Connor was known for his devotion to his family, especially to his daughter Ciara. Though he tried to keep their relationship a secret, fearing that her illegitimate status would make her a target, it is likely that most people knew who Ciara's father was years before he made it public. Contrary to his fears, Ciara is well loved in Cearnach and this has helped to further strengthen the policies that both she and Connor have put into place.

Fithir was the daughter of a fairly minor noble family in the city of Cearnach, but thanks to some fairly complicated negotiations she was betrothed to Connor Cearnach before either she or Connor had actually been born. As such, her whole life was spent preparing to be the queen of Cearnach, with no regard to whether she wanted to be or not. There were many times throughout her life she seriously considered running away, but she never quite worked up the nerve. Then, after she actually met Connor, she found, to her surprise, that she quite liked him. It likely helped that he was no more enthusiastic about the arrangement than she was, and would have happily let it go if he could have. Both of them were involved with other people before their marriage, and leaving her girlfriend to marry someone else was one of the most difficult things Fithir ever had to do.
After Connor's death, Fithir served as regent for some years, as their daughter Brigit was only a child, and Connor's daughter Ciara had chosen her own life. Unfortunately, her death in combat against an invading army has left Brigit, and the kingdom, in Ciara's care after all.

Despite her age, she is still quite a formidable doe, and she is one of the very few people who can beat Deirdre Lohan in a fair fight. She is very protective of her grandchildren, whom she raised, and she was one of the first rabbits to accept Ciara Lohan as one of their own.

The two of them were orphaned at a young age, after Niamh's father Liam murdered their mother Bebinn and abandoned them in the wilderness. This experience left Fiachra a little suspicious of strangers and perhaps a little harsher in her dealings with convicted criminals than she might be, though she is also a moral and compassionate person who despises cruelty. She has been one of the driving forces behind the newly formed Oseille militia, spurred by her desire to protect her people and to have them remain a major power on the island.

Despite her dark past, she is a cheerful, boisterous wolf with a queer sense of humor and a rather romantic view of the distant past. She is particularly fond of dressing up in ridiculous toy armor and re-enacting battles that almost certainly never happened in real life. Those who don't see past her playful exterior are surprised to find that she is also a competent and deadly soldier with the circumstances call for it. Catherine is the last surviving member of the Coburn family of Jaspertree, a once powerful merchant family that, up until twenty years ago, was responsible for the majority of shipping into and out of the city. Due to internal politics, and the fact that President Marcus Keppler had a personal grudge against her family, her parents and most of her kin were murdered or fled the city, leaving her the sole heir to the shipping company and the family mansion. Despite these problems, Catherine has stayed in Jaspertree partly out of stubbornness and partly out of a desire to help implement sweeping reforms across the city. She participated in the disastrous Revolution of 1854 (by the Jaspertree Standard Calendar) and though the conflict saw the defeat and death of President Keppler, it soon became evident that his replacement was little better.
These days, she spends much of her time on board her ship the Scylla, an old merchant vessel which she has been clandestinely converting into a warship. She fears that her former ties to the current administration and her strong disagreement with President Frost's policies will make her a target.

Sarah grew up as one of Jaspertree's many street kids. An orphan for as long as she can remember, she spent sixteen years living out on the street and surviving on her wits and what she could steal. Unusually for someone in her position, she was careful only to take what she needed to keep food in her belly and clothes on her back, and she frequently shared what she had with others on the street. She met Catherine at the age of sixteen, when Catherine discovered the nest that Sarah had made in one of the Coburn family warehouses. This desire was thwarted by Embarr's habit of throwing or trampling anyone who tried to put bridle or tack on him, and by his obstinate refusal to work with other horses. It is possible that he would have been sold, or killed, except that he developed a close friendship with the then nine-year-old Ciara Lohan. When Ciara's parents sent her into protective exile at the age of twelve, Embarr carried her out of the city and the two of them remained close friends for the rest of his life. Unfortunately, he was killed during the brief war of 1334 in an attempt to save Ciara's life and he was placed on the funeral pyre along with Ciara's father King Connor.

She is the only known foal of the stallion Embarr, and she has inherited a great deal of her sire's temperament and his intelligence. Though she stands on four legs and is unable to speak, Thirteen is at least as intelligent as Ciara and is completely devoted to her friend and mistress, to the point that she refuses to carry Ciara or those she knows to be Ciara's close friends or family. Despite her age, she still has the vigor and stamina of her youth and it's possible she will outlive her contemporaries by a considerable margin.

Like most of her forebears, she took a rather militaristic view of the world and had a tendency to approach even domestic, internal affairs as one would a military campaign. Despite this, she has a secret, sentimental core and she was incredibly fond of both King Connor of Cearnach and Connor's daughter Ciara, viewing them as worthy opponents and the only people in the world who she considered her equals.

Alana was Sabia Cuarán's third child, and the only one to live. Curiously, her father was not Sabia's husband, as the king-consort of Blackpool was already dead before she was conceived. Rather, Alana's father was a traveling priest named Donnchadh, a young margay whose parents were among the first known immigrants to Viridis. Donnchadh left the island without ever knowing about his daughter and Sabia rarely spoke him and forbade Alana from ever asking about her father. Alana did her best to be a dutiful daughter and to make her mother happy, even going so far as to join the Blackpool Army when she was old enough and work her way up through the ranks in the normal way. She did not particularly enjoy her life as a soldier, but she was good at it and she soon achieved the rank of Captain. She perished in the war of 1334 against the fox kingdom of Cearnach, while attempting to aid Ciara Lohan's attempts to end the war. She was buried in a secret grave on the site of the lynx's original settlement and she is regarded as a hero by her people.

The two of them are close friends with Deirdre Lohan, and act as her bodyguards for official functions, most likely at Ciara's insistence. Those who cannot see past their species and their normally submissive demeanor are often surprised by how competent they are at their job.

For her part, Sunflower spends most of her time traveling from one end of the island to other in a attempt to raise awareness of the importance of the forests and to encourage people to plant a new tree for everyone they fell. She is well liked in all three of the major kingdoms on the island, and while she is passionate about her cause she takes care not to be abrasive or accusatory in her campaigns. She dislikes the brigands and outlaws who hide out in her forests and she has been instrumental in bringing several of Viridis' most notorious criminals to what justice exists on the island.

He willingly wears a halter that Sunflower fashioned for him herself, as a symbol of his bond to her, and though she would never compel him to do anything he did not wish to do, it is widely known that there is little he would not do for her.

It's likely that her unusual fur coloring is yet another manifestation of her strange heritage. For those who are cautious enough to watch their pockets, she can be a good friend and she doesn't seem to have a cruel bone in her body. Cassandra is the owner and sole employee of Archangel's Bar, Hope Street, Jaspertree. She has never told anyone how she acquired the bar, though she has hinted at having won it in a game of chance. While Archangel's is just one of the dozens of hole-in-the-wall bars located around the city, it has become one of the best known and most popular thanks to the proprietor's cheerful demeanor and, more importantly, her curious markings. For while Cassandra is a pure-bred red fox, she bears the colors and markings of an English Spot rabbit rather than the rusty fur of her own species. It's likely that her sideline as a nude model has helped matters as well. Thanks to its popularity with the soldiers from the local barracks, and the workers from a nearby steel mill, Archangel's is most likely the safest bar in the city, and Cassandra repays this favor by enforcing a ban on any of the criminal gatherings that plague so many of the other bars in the city.

After the abolition of slavery in the city some hundred years ago, these industries were rapidly taken over by more legitimate proprietors. One of the most famous of these is the Moorhaart family who took over the city's brothels and immediately transformed them into a string of nightclubs. The former slaves, many of whom had known no other life and had no other family or home, were offered paid employment instead. Many of these same families still work for the Moorhaart's today. Though prostitution is still legal in Jaspertree, Jimena's clubs disdain the practice and deal harshly with anyone who would take advantage of their employees. Jimena herself is a well known and liked performer in the Silver Street Club, which is rumored to have once been the original brothel where one of her ancestors was enslaved.
