Timekeeper's Fall

Commission for VoidWolf

"Hurry, this way," Thribus whispered harshly with a wave of his arm before ducking into an alcove in the cliff-side.

The trio had been running for several minutes, staying to the trail along the cliff face that overlooked the ocean. Thribus, an elf with golden hair and wearing plain leather armor scouted ahead of the group while Xalanth and his wife, Kalea, took the rear. When Thribus' gave the signal that the path ahead was clear, they shuffled along the path. They had to hold their cargo up over their heads to squeeze through narrower passages.

Xalanth and Kalea slowly made their way through the pass until Thribus called for a halt by holding his fist in the air. The pair stopped and, with a motion from Thribus, waited as the elf disappeared.

"We'll be all right," Xalanth said, pulling his wife to him. "Thribus is the best there is. He'll find a safe path."

Kalea nodded and pulled the two satchel bags they carried between them and rested her head upon them.

------

Xalanth arrived at the ball late that evening. Dressed in his finest suit, the human wandered through the ballroom with one hand behind back just above the hip with other held across his chest. As he looked around, his gaze fell upon a woman standing on the other side of the ballroom floor.

A woman in a blue dress with gold embroidery stood alone with her brunette hair framing her shoulders. When he approached her, he bowed low. But before he could say anything, another man stepped in front and took her hand.

            "May I have this dance?"

Xalanth straightened himself up and pushed the man out of the way. "I was here first!"

"And I asked the question first! Her arm is mine to take!"

"And I'll give it to neither of you, thank you," the woman responded and, lifting up her dress, stomped off.

Xalanth watched her leave as the other man stood beside him. "You don't want that one anyway," he said. "She's half-elf. I only interrupted you to save you the embarrassment."

"Indeed," Xalanth replied, still watching as the woman faded into the crowd.

------

Thribus returned moments later to give the pair the all clear. They exited the alcove and ran into the field. Beyond the tall grass was the forest where they hoped to find their salvation.

Shortly after they crossed the grassland and reached the tree line, a man stepped out in front of them, his armor gleaming a copper sheen in the moonlight. He carried no weapon.  The group stopped. "You will go no further," the human said. "Hand over the woman and the eggs, and this will all be over."

Kalea clutched her satchel to her chest as Xalanth stepped in front of her. "We will not!"

"Why do you tempt fate, Xalanth?" the man asked. "You know that coupling with one not attuned to the flow of time as we are weakens it, as well as us."

"You're wrong, Tarxix!" Xalanth yelled. "I'm stronger than ever because of her!"

"Hand them over!" Tarxix held out his hand. "I swear to you, they will not be harmed, but you must hand them over to me!"

            "No!"

Thribus stepped in front of Xalanth. "I'll hold him off. You two must get to safety. Go!"

Footsteps crept up behind the group. Three more stepped into the woods, all wearing dragonscale armor that shimmered in the moonlight, each their own unique color. Among them was a dwarf with hair that matched his bronze plated armor. "Xalanth, you know this is wrong."

"What you're trying to make me do is wrong! How can you all not see that?" Xalanth spun around slowly, talking to all four of his pursuers.

------

"My lady, if I may," Xalanth approached the half-elf maiden again, bowing before her once more. "I am known as Xalanth. I would be honored if I might know your name."

The maiden turned to face him and scowled. "And what might one such as you do with my name?"

"Cherish it for an eternity, my lady," Xalanth replied, still bowing.

"I see..." The maiden stepped toward him and touched the end of her fan to his chin. Xalanth straightened himself up and held out his hand, palm up. The maiden took it, and curtsied. "Kalea Windstorm, my lord. And have you a surname?"

Xalanth lifted Kalea's hand to his lips and kissed it softly. "I'm afraid I haven't, my lady Kalea."

------

"There will be consequences, Xalanth." An elf of silver armor and hair stepped forward.

Xalanth narrowed his eyes at him. "And there will be consequences if you dare touch her, or our eggs, Shikal."

Thribus pressed his back against Xalanth's, his clothing changing to a set of dragon-scale armor like their assailants, but gold, and his hair turned to match it. Xalanth too donned his armor, his clothing morphing into white dragon-scales and handed his satchel to his wife. He leaned down to her, never taking his eyes off of his opponents. "You won't have much time," he whispered to her. "Run the moment the battle starts."

Swallowing, Kalea took the other satchel and slung it over her shoulder with hers.

"I cannot turn away the one I love."

"Then you forfeit yours, and their lives, Xalanth," all four of their pursuers said at once. Then all four drew swords out of the air with a wave of their hands in unison, the blades of each matching the metal of their armor. Thribus and Xalanth did the same.

            "Now, go!" Xalanth hissed.

"I love you," Kalea whispered and began to run.

The elf in silver armor broke off to follow her, but Xalanth was quicker. He blocked his path with his blade, then spun and, forming a ball of ice in his hand, threw it at the copper armored human when he tried to give chase. The ball exploded on impact and sent spear-like shards in all directions. Tarxix protected his face with both arms, the ice shards bouncing off or shattering against the armor.

Thribus launched himself toward the remaining two and drew back his sword with one hand. A ball of fire formed in the other and he pointed it ahead of him as he ran. He fired a stream of flames from it, sweeping it back and forth in front of him. The elven woman shot a stream of water up from the ground in front of she and the dwarf to block the flames, steam rising with a loud hiss. When he was in range, Thribus stopped the fire and brought his sword down upon the bronze armored dwarf.

The dwarf countered, deflecting the blade with his own and then bashing him in the face. Thribus staggered backward and managed to swing his sword upward in time to block a black blade aimed for his neck. His feet twisted beneath him and he fell to the ground. An elf woman in black armor stood over him and brought her sword down again. Thribus rolled out of the way, and the woman's sword slashed into the ground.

Xalanth faced both Shikal and Tarxix, parrying and stabbing at the silver and copper armored soldiers as they attacked. None made contact until Xalanth ducked beneath the silver blade, stepped into him, and brought his shoulder up under the elf's chin and sent him flying. Shikal hit the ground with a thud, the impact against his jaw knocking him unconscious. Without it's master, the elf's silver sword vanished in a wisp of silver smoke.

Xalanth moved in for the kill, but was struck from behind by Tarxix before he could stab the silver armored elf through. The copper sword bounced off Xalanth's armor, Xalanth spun, connecting his fist to the human's jaw. "You won't take Kalea from me!" he yelled, turning back to Shikal and driving his sword through the elf's chest.

------

Xalanth entered the council chamber of the Timekeepers. He was the last to arrive, and he took his usual seat at the round table in the center of the massive room. The table had been carved out of the rock that made up the floor and walls of the room, as though the room were dug out around the table rather than the table being brought in after the room was built.

"You know why we called you here, Xalanth," said a woman sitting directly across from him. Despite the massive, empty room, there was no echo when spoke.

Xalanth nodded. "I do. And I'm not changing my mind."

"Staying with her jeopardizes everything we have fought to protect these past millennia," the woman said, leaning forward in her seat and resting her elbows on the table. Her golden armor clinked as she moved. "Why would you put the safety of the entire material plane at risk for the sake of one female?"

"For the same reason you would not abandon Thribus, Junkara. Love." Xalanth leaned back in his seat and folded his arms in front of him.

Junkara sat up straight. "That is different. He is sensitive to fluctuations in time as we are. She is not."

Xalanth shook his head. "And that doesn't matter to me. She is the one I love. If you can't handle that, then I want no further part in this council." He stood up and started toward the door.

"Xalanth!" Thribus beckoned, and Xalanth paused. "Please, try to understand. We don't know what staying with her will do!"

Xalanth didn't look at any of the other council members as he spoke, his back still turned on them. "Then I'm going to find out."

The room fell silent, and Xalanth walked out of the chamber for the last time.

------

Kalea ran as fast as she could. Her lungs burned, her leg muscles ached. The satchels full of eggs burned against her shoulders, and she was forced to stop. She knew she wouldn't be able to outrun them for long,

"I'm sorry, love..." she said under her breath looking back toward where she left her husband behind. Sighing, she carved a hole into the ground in front of her with a wave of her hand, then reached into one of the satchels. She pulled out an egg as tears formed in her eyes. Her gaze followed the blue lines running along the egg's ridges as she gently caressed it with her hands. "Be safe..."

One by one she placed the three eggs into the hole and then covered them in dirt with another wave of her hand. A third wave removed any evidence that a hole had been dug, and then she rose to her feet.

Wiping her eyes as she stared at the ground, she whispered goodbye and then began to run once more.

------

Months had passed since Xalanth left the council chamber of the Timekeepers. He and Kalea had gone to live in solitude, not simply to stay hidden from the council members, but because it was what they had planned all along. They were alone, together, and that was all they needed.

In the back room of the home they had carved out of the cliff was a nest made of fur pillows. Resting in the center of the nest were three large eggs, each as large as Xalanth's thigh and pale white with streams of blue threaded into the tiny ridges.

Kalea leaned up against Xalanth as the pair stood in the entryway to the nest room. "They're beautiful, aren’t they?"

            Xalanth kissed her forehead. "Yes."

Xalanth and Kalea both jumped when they heard pounding on the front door suddenly, their faces going pale. "They found us..." Xalanth whispered. "Get the satchels."

As Kalea left to get the bags, Xalanth slowly approached the door.

"Xalanth?!" a familiar voice called from outside. "Xalanth, it's Thribus! Open the door, please!"

Xalanth called his armor to appear as he opened the door. Thribus didn't hesitate to push his way inside. "I swear, I'm here to help. Now hurry, the others are on their way."

            "How did you find us?"

"I've been keeping tabs on you since you left the council that day," Thribus replied. "I'm sorry, but it was too late when I saw them following me along the ridge. Pelkar went back to get the others. They'll be here soon."

Xalanth blocked the elf's path form getting further into the house. "Why are you doing this? Why should I trust you?"

"Because I agree that you have done nothing wrong, and should not suffer for love, and now I'm to suffer the same fate as you. Now hurry!"

Kalea came into the front room with the two satchels, and gave one to Xalanth.

            "Are those-"

            "Yes," Xalanth interrupted the man.

"Ah hells... All right, come with me." Thribus then turned on his heel and snuck out through the front door. "All clear, let's go. There's path not far up the trail that we can take to get to the woods."

Kalea stepped forward. "Can we not just fly?"

Thribus shook his head. "No. They're too close and would spot us for sure. Now get going." The elf left the home and turned right, keeping low as he ran along the trail.

------

"What have you done?!" Tarxix yelled as Xalanth placed his boot on Shikal's chest and yanked his sword free. "You'll destroy everything!"

"None of this would have happened if you had just left us in peace!"

Tarxix shook his head, waving his arm in front of him. "You knew we couldn't do that!"

"And you knew I would fight back!" Xalanth responded. The elf's body began to smoke behind him and slowly fade away, armor and all, to become nothing but a small pile of silver dust. "Now are you going to do what you came here to do and fight me, or are you going to cower like always?"

While they spoke, Thribus was still trying to fight off the other two. Xalanth glanced over his shoulder just in time to witness the black armored soldier turn her fist into a dripping ball of acid and strike Thribus directly in the chest.

The liquid sizzled against Thribus' golden armor and began to spread. The elf let out a wail as he stepped away and fell to the ground, writhing in pain. The acid spread and consumed his armor completely before Xalanth could reach him, and his flailing ceased. Thribus's eyes were dark and smoke soon began to rise from his body as it evaporated, leaving behind a small pile of gold dust.

"I'm sorry, Thribus..." the woman said, saluting the pile of gold.

A rumble erupted from Xalanth's chest so loud it rattled his armor. He drew back his sword and yelled, then charged the woman. She turned to face him, but was blasted by a wave of icy wind and thrown to the ground. Xalanth continued his stream of ice as he walked toward her, freezing her legs to the ground. Before he reached her, the dwarf rushed him and knocked him to the ground. When they got to their feet, Xalanth was the first to connect his sword. The blade drove into the dwarf's shoulder and he let out a growling yell.

The dwarf stabbed at him, But Xalanth deflected the sword with his bracer, then struck him in the face with his elbow. Before the dwarf could recover, Xalanth placed his palm over the dwarf's mouth and shot a stream of mist down his throat. The dwarf's brass colored armor expanded as his body bloated inside it, his entire form quaking.

Ice and pieces of armor and flesh went flying everywhere as the dwarf suddenly exploded in rush of chill wind. Tarxix pulled a piece of muscle off of his shoulder and tossed it to the ground as it began to evaporate like the other soldier's bodies. Gulping, he held his sword out in front of him and faced Xalanth as the black armored elf finally chipped enough of the ice off of her to get to her feet.

            "ENOUGH!!"

All eyes turned toward the voice. It was Junkara. Standing next to her was Kalea with her wrists bound in front of her. In Junkara's other hand were the satchels.

"You were warned, Xalanth," she said.

Kalea gazed into Xalanth's eyes and nodded. Before a word could be said, Junkara raised her sword and ran the half-elf maiden through the chest. When she withdrew her blade, she then dropped the satchels and drove the end of her golden sword through each one multiple times as Kalea's body slumped to the ground.

"Nooooo!!!" Xalanth's voice boomed throughout the woods, his attackers having to brace themselves against the shockwave. "GRAAAAHHH!!!"

Xalanth's armor snapped and stretched. His body grew taller. His arms turned into forelegs, his fingernails into massive claws. His legs broke at the heels and stretched as his thighs expanded. His skin and armor became scales and multiplied as he continued to grow. Wings burst forth from his shoulder blades as he dropped onto all four legs, and a tail shot out behind him and flicked upward, knocking the black armored soldier clear into the sky. Xalanth's face stretched out into a scaled muzzle with spear-like teeth. The air chilled around him and frost formed on the leaves nearby.

Xalanth shook in his new snow-white form, the frill coming out of the back of his head shaking as he looked down upon Junkara form above the trees. "Now you die!"

"Becoming your true form will not change your fate, Xalanth!"

Junkara and Tarxix did the same, soon becoming just as tall in their gold and copper forms. The flesh of their wings gave a metallic shimmer and, unlike Xalanth's, ran from the shoulders all the way down to their hips.

Xalanth was the first to strike. His teeth sunk into the neck of the gold dragon. Junkara reared back and pulled herself free, slashing at Xalanth's face with her claws. Tarxix pulled his head back and sucked in a breath, then spewed forth a green liquid from his mouth. It splashed on Xalanth's back and he spun around with a roar.

Xalanth's tail smashed into the copper dragon, sending him to the ground as the sound of cracking trees echoed around them.

With his back turned, Junkara lept into the air and pounced on Xalanth, clamping her jaw into the back of his neck. Xalanth jumped and spun, but couldn't get her off.

Xalanth then flapped his wings, sending both he and the gold dragon into the air. Before he came down again, he flipped over and crushed the gold dragon against the ground.

Junkara let go of his neck from the impact as the breath was knocked out of her. Xalanth rolled off of her and before she could recover, snorted a spear of ice into her eye. Junkara flailed about on the ground, her tail and wings kicking up dirt and trees all around her while covering her eye. Again Xalanth lunged for her throat, this time connecting. He locked his jaw and began to pull. Junkara scratched and slashed with her claws trying to get him off, but his jaw held.

The sound of flesh tearing was only interrupted by Junkara's gurgling roars as she kicked and twisted. As liquid gold spurt from her throat, Xalanth placed his forelegs on either side of her neck beside his head and pushed as he pulled his head back.

Golden blood shot from the gaping wound and showered the nearby trees as her throat was ripped away. With Junkara still writhing beneath his claws, Xalanth formed a spear of ice above Junkara's head with his icy breath and let it fall. It drove clean through her head and all flailing and roaring ceased instantly.

With golden blood still dripping from his mouth, the white dragon spat out the flesh in his teeth and then turned to face the copper dragon. Tarxix's eyes flicked between Xalanth and the dead Junkara, frozen in place.

Xalanth lunged. The copper dragon jumped up and over him and took flight, his wings flapping furiously to give him enough lift to get away.

With his opponent gone, Xalanth let out a roar that shook the very earth. He then transformed back into his human disguise and ran to his wife's body.

He ran his fingers through her hair as the body of the gold dragon began to evaporate.

"The…eggs…" she coughed. "Th-they're…" Her breath gave out before she could finish as her eyes rolled back into her head. Her body then went completely limp in Xalanth's arms.

As tears welled up in his eyes, Xalanth held her body to his chest. A sharp pressure formed inside him as he began to sob, then let out a wail as the tears streamed down his cheeks.

When he could scream no more, he pulled the satchels to him and peered inside. They were both nothing more than goop with whatever remained of the eggs that were to be his children, and he could look no more.

He picked up each satchel by its strap and lifted his wife off the ground. "I swear I will find them. And when I do, I will take all of time with their lives."

He knew that his wife's body wouldn't evaporate like the other's. She wasn't a time keeper, and so her body was fated to corrode as that of other mortals.

He built his monument to his wife and buried her beneath the crypt with the satchels of the eggs' remains and placed a tombstone of ice in the center of the burial site.

------

Centuries had passed since the battle of the Timekeepers. A wizard from the gnomish lands had been traveling for years to find the truth of the legends of the Timekeepers. As a scholar, it was his duty to find the truths hidden in the legends.

He'd heard of a monument that was rumored to have been built in the name of Xalanth. After years of traveling, he finally discovered the location of the monument in the forest near a cliff overlooking the ocean. After hours of searching, he finally stumbled upon the entrance to the ruins.

The archway was cracked and broken, the towers behind it crumbling and covered in moss and vines. He ventured into the crypt resting in the center of the towers and followed the path down below ground. He lit a torch to light his way, and eventually the path opened up into a giant room at the bottom. There was a chill in the air that made him shiver even through his thick robes. In the middle of the room was a single slab standing out of the ground made of ice.

The wizard approached it and read the words carved into it written in an old dialect of Draconic:

Into the depths of time shall your soul venture

Until the day comes that I end all time.

Then together we may be once more

The family we were meant to be forevermore.

After taking his notes, the gnome left the crypt and started examining the rest of the ruins. Just beyond the boundaries of the monument, he spotted a patch of flowers.

"Interesting," he said to himself. "Those flowers only grow in the mountains. I wonder..."

As he approached the flower bed, he felt suddenly warm and the air around him grew thicker. He knelt down in the center and moved the flowers aside. A single blue dragon scale the size of his palm stuck out of the ground.

"Ooh, myyy…" he said. "There's powerful dragon magic here." The wizard began to dig with his bare hands. Before long, his fingers felt something hard. He cleared it aside.

An hour passed before he had finally uncovered the strange treasure. Inside the hole were three eggs with blue tendrils among the ridges. He was about to reach out to pick one up, when it suddenly cracked open, and there was movement inside. The other two did the same soon after as the gnome stared at them with a wide smile.

This is request written for https://wolf-seeker.sofurry.com/ and his mate, VoidWolf. Seeker is also an author and worth taking a look, so go check him out!

This story came out to 14 pages long (4044 words), and under normal commission prices would have been $38. I needed samples to show what I'm capable of on a commission basis, and this is one of three friends who jumped on board. So thanks WolfSeeker and Void for helping me out!

As with all of my stories, constructive criticism is always welcome. Enjoy!

Commission details coming soon!

Xalanth and setting are VoidWolf's. Story and additional characters are mine. Please do not repost without proper credits and a link to the original work. Thanks!
