My guess is AJ is dead, but came back- sort of like a guardian angel. Apple Eden has been seen being able to see and communicate with the dead via her own abilities. I think Rarity can because she used to be dead herself.

i suspect there are special circumstances at work for aj, in a previous comic where Apple eden interacted with the soul of a filly she did not, to my memory, have a halo....its also posible that Vava is messing with us and when aj moves we will discover what were mistakeing for a halo is actualy just a metal ornament on the wall...*snicker*

Either that or the halo's symbolic for her trying to look warm and inviting after being called old. We'll certainly find out.
