Created as a replacement for the M48 and M103 tanks in US service, the M60 Patton series of tanks would be a mainstay of the US military's armored capability for four decades. The M60A1, itself an improved version of the original M60, entered service in 1962 and soldiered on in the hands of American troops into the new century. In fact, US Marine Corps M60A1 Pattons destroyed a large force of Iraqi tanks, including Soviet-built T-72 tanks, during the Battle of Kuwait International Airport as part of Operation Desert Storm. Though officially retired from its combat role, Patton tanks, including 'A3 models, remain in storage/reserve and a number of them are utilized by the US Air Force for testing purposes.
The M60 Patton would also see extensive service with other nations around the world. Over 1,700 M60A3 Pattons are in service with Turkey, making the nation currently the largest operator of Patton tanks. A further 800+ are in service with Egypt. Israel has also field large numbers of the tank including their own modification featuring explosive reactive armor designated as the "Magach." Israeli Pattons would see their combat debut during the Yom Kippur War where, despite losses to Egyptian anti-tank missiles, the type would gain popularity with the IDF. The Magach variant would prove itself nigh-unstoppable during the 1982 Lebanon War where it face T-54/55s and T-72s. Patton tanks were also fielded by Austria, Italy, Ethiopia, Norway, and Argentina. Various models of the M60 Patton remain in service with various countries including Saudi Arabia, Spain, Greece, the Republic of China, and Bosnia-Herzegovina
