It could be that Daniel was already feeling doubts, and left out to begin with. I mean you saw him in the car ride. He didn't seem happy, and true that could just be linked to new people discomfort, I myself have it. But I think it could be more than that.
Joel's time with his friends has either maybe not been brought up, or very vague. So the knowledge that this necklace was lost (even though it was found) was a revealed mystery, and therefore something for the detached Daniel to latch onto, who wasn't really thinking about what he was doing due to losing his temper.
