I recently got a Netflix account, and used it to check out the last couple Equestria Girls Movies.
Now, I liked the first two - I went in really not having many expectations for the movies (I didn't even know they were movies, I thought it was going to be a spinoff episodic series). My thoughts going in were about the same as they were before I started giving MLP a shot, I knew a lot of stigma had been stacked against it but I didn't really want to fall into that stigma without giving the series a fair shot.
And, I was pleasantly surprised by the movies in that they did right what the show did right - they knew what they were but also didn't talk down to the audience. There weren't really any moments I felt myself groaning at or any scenes I particularly hated. I got out of the movies what should have been got out of them and didn't regret seeing them, which is a big thing considering some of the movies that have come out in the 2010 decade as of late.
The third one wasssssss okay. Like, don't get me wrong, there were a lot of things I liked about it - and I like the characters enough that I didn't really notice a lot of the issues until I reviewed what I had seen. There aren't any BIG issues, it's just that school wars have kinda been a popular trend in episodic media these days (Kill La Kill, Mob Pyshcho 100, etc.) and so when I saw that this was what the plot was going to be I wasn't really thrilled about it. The cliches I expected werrrre in there. When the movie ended I didn't really feel like it had done the school wars thing wrong but I wasn't particularly impressed either. I didn't regret watching the movie but I wouldn't really watch it again. Again, there were good elements that I liked, they just weren't enough to help the movie be more than "okay" for me.
Lastly, the latest movie Legend Of Everfree was again "okay" for me. I actually liked it better than the third one, but again like the third one it uses another kids show trope plot. NOW: If a show uses a trope plot like a summer camp episode, it's totally okay as long as it gives it's own spin on it and makes it unique enough that the experience doesn't feel like a trope. The movie felt like it didn't really try to do that until the last third. Again: I like the characters a LOT and I would love to see them doing anything that I can do personally an we DO get to see how each of the characters would act in a summer camp. But I felt like the plot of the movie should have focused less on that. The focus kinda shifts between Twilight, the plot, and the camp experience. The focus wasn't necessarily scattered or anything but I did feel like the focus should have stayed on Twilight's issue a bit more than it did. But the movie did have some things I did enjoy. The villain's design both in and out of the story was really cool. I also liked the twist, It did genuinely catch me off guard and turned a leadership trope into a pretty decent turnaround.
With that said, I have two things that I got from these movies:
1.) HUMAN BULK BICEPS IS A DAMNED MONSTER - HE SCARES THE LIVING PISS OUT OF ME
2.) "PONY-ING UP" IS A STUPID PHRASE - Please figure out a better way of saying "We are growing ears n' shit now and have magic, yeah" because saying that you are "Pony-ing up" is the one thing in this entire franchise that has made me cringe. AND I'VE SEEN SOME SHIT, OKAY?!!?
