Communication - IMs

by
So people sometimes ask how to chat to me (and many argue about my choice of IM and/or lack thereof) so here I am going to list my current IMs, the ones that I've stopped using and will take suggestions of ones to join. I'm only talking to one or two people regularly these days. This is partly due to time, partly due to not looking for new people much and partly because I don't use the messengers that are trendy at the time.

Current IMs

Google Chat (rakuengrowlithe@gmail.com)

I got this because of Android. It's one of my more mainstream messengers and works as on the box. Although I'm not actually on it as much as I used to be. I only have a  couple people that use Google Chat and I used to use it as one of many on multi-protocol messengers.

F-List (rakuen)

This is actually one I would prefer to move most chats to. From what I recall the site had pretty decent security and it's a furry project. There's a Pidgin plugin for it and a third-party Android app so I can use it anywhere.

IRC (rakuen on furnet)

I went back to IRC after a few years not using it. I've got a registered nick on furnet which is again, a furry project. I now have this open quite a bit when I'm on PC and there are also Android apps for IRC so I do sometimes use it that way too.

Steam (rakuen03)

Mostly for gaming and not really where I want to chat but it's always running on my PC. Of course, that also means that just because I'm on Steam it doesn't mean that I want to chat.

Discontinued IMs

ICQ

I was having problems with ICQ and then it wanted me to add my phone number to my account. Yeah... I'm not doing that.

Yahoo!

This was my main chat account for a long time. Sadly they changed their messenger protocol recently and it no longer allows third-party connections. I'm not interested in running hundreds of individual messengers. Steam runs separately for gaming. IRC runs separately because I prefer Quassel to IRC in Pidgin (also IRC isn't strictly an IM programme).

MSM/Skype

When MSN became Skype I stopped using it. I looked into using it recently but it doesn't accept third-party clients. There is a Pidgin extension for Skype but it requires Skype running at the same time.

Suggestions for other messengers

I am open to other messenger suggestions but I would like them to work on both Android and PC. Ideally they should be work with multi-protocol clients, especially Pidgin. I'm not interested in sharing my phone number with strangers or having contacts linked to my phone contacts. I have looked at WhatsApp and Telegram and I want nothing to do with them. They do not work the way I expect an IM programme to work. After the whole NSA spying nonsense I am also interested in more encrypted chats. I know many of my old ones are not secure (although Pidgin supports OTR, just no one uses it...). That's why I was interested in running Google Chat and  other XMPP.Jabber protocols through ChatSecure, even though it's not the nicest client ever.

Like I said, Telegram is completely out. Anyway, since this, I started using Discord.
