Adventure of Link

In most versions of Hyrule, Death Mountain is in the northeast. But in Adventure of Link, it's in the southwest. BUT WHY?!

Perhaps the lands south and west of Death Mountain are so overrun with monsters in the decline timeline that it has become completely uninhabitable! Thus the Hylian people have been forced into the outlands north and east of Death Mountain that we have seen in no other Zelda game.

I think they tried to explain that the old Zelda 1 & 2 games take place towards the later end of the timeline(s), specifically that the lands were reformed by the kings wish in windwaker, a fairly decent way to explain the minimalistic towns & missing items.
