As some of you guessed, yes, I was venting about Patreon. And yes, it's primarily due to how it's often abused by artists. Specifically, using it as a paywall. Also, it irritates me how often some will plug it. Like having an occasional ad is one thing, but putting the Patreon logo and writing a URL in the description of every single pic with statements like "this picture was originally funded and posted on Patreon!" It's to the point where the mention of it almost sets me off! I even block mentions of it on Tumblr for this reason!
Now, not every artist does this, I feel like these are the minority. Lets face it, in a perfect world, we'd all be making enough money to live simply by doing what we want, but not everyone is capable of consistently pumping out $100 commissions like bigger name artists are. (Hell, many of us can't even AFFORD them!) So I completely get why some are turning to Patreon. It's just that, when you start putting time-delays and outright paywalls on your work, you begin alienating your audience. You're basically saying "if you can't pay me every month, you don't deserve me!" I feel like I'm being punished enough by life in general because I can't afford everything, and now you're punishing me too? Like the number of things I can enjoy keeps shrinking! If you're doing that, then I think it's you who don't deserve me! And if I did have money, if I could afford something, well, you lost my business!
And you know where this all started? One artist I considered a friend who used to openly answer questions about his characters and whatnot. Basically, he was pretty easy to talk to, and we got along pretty nicely. Then he opened his Patreon, and that changed. He stopped answering questions, started delaying his pics by as long as ONE MONTH, and get this, he even HOLDS CASH GIVAWAYS! He's LITERALLY making more money than he needs, and I'm here wondering how much longer will I'll have a roof over my head with daily essentials that's BARELY paid for! Meanwhile, he thinks he's hot shit because he has money to not only upgrade his computer whenever he needs, but just blows it away every month! You didn't EARN it! IT WAS GIVEN TO YOU! YOU SOLD OUT TO YOUR POPULARITY AND TOLD ME TO FUCK OFF! It's people like him who deserves NOTHING! But everyone keeps funding him with more money than he needs! He used to be my good friend, but now I despise him for this very reason, and this very reason is why I hate Patreon!
