Iggi's Character Design Info

My friend Iggi did a panel at FAU again this year about designing characters and making reference sheets. She really added a lot more info since last year, and has uploaded the slides for everyone to see. There's a lot of good stuff in there! If you need help understanding where to start on making a character from scratch, or have a pre-existing one that you feel could look better somehow, but you're not sure what to change, definitely give this a read.

Character Design Basics by Iggi

The character that was designed by the class during that panel can be found here, too.

The guide says white characters with no markings are boring! ;n;

It's all a matter of opinion, it's not meant to be taken as hard and fast rules. I just get a lot of people who want to design characters and don't know where to start, so I thought this would be good for sparking those initial ideas. I didn't mean for it to seem like I, nor Iggi, was saying this is The Only Way to design things. It's just to help those who don't know much about color palettes, markings, etc.

I had thoughts about this slideshow, but they spiralled out of control and blew past the character limit for comments, so I wrote a journal entry if you feel like checking it out: https://inkbunny.net/journalview.php?id=243219

That was interesting, but it seems to come at making characters from a completely different angle than I do. It also seems less likely to generate natural looking furs, and more likely to generate what I call 'Chernobyl' furries. (Those furs with outrageously flamboyant colors and/or species crossings. Glowing flesh optional.) All of this is opinion, of course, but sadly, I wasn't able to take too much away from it.

Of course, judging by some of the stuff there about designing characters to sell, I don't think it was targeted to me in anyway.

I did like the bit about patterns and color pallets though. Those may be useful in the future, so I'll keep the link to this handy.

Oh, I totally understand. Like I said before, it didn't seem like a lot of this was actually aimed at me. Still fun to read, and I did learn a few things. I've never been good with colors...
