I use Inverted controls in airplanes and helicopter games, but normal control in 3'rd person games. every flight simulator back in the good old C64 and Amiga days had inverted controls, and I guess they stuck.

I would think in 3rd person, inverted would make more sense at least, because you are behind the person so you'd have to pull their head down from behind for them to look up... hmm.

But yeah those of us who grew up in the old days where inverted was the default setting... but now non-invert is the default setting.

I'm assuming you're refering to the vertical control of the camera/visor/aircraft/whatever in video games. I always used inverted as well, but i supposed it's a matter of habit. It does make more sense when it comes to an aircraft like in starfox imho.

Heh. Edited my journal a bit now. Guess I should've added the aircraft thing which is the only place people seem to agree on inverted yet, if you think about it, for aircraft, inverted IS the normal for aircraft so... yeah.

Flying vehicle controls should always be inverted, though.

I can just never remember if I prefer inverted or normal, and then spend a few minutes of gameplay trying to turn the camera the wrong way and end up changing it back and forth.

I stick with non inverted controls when I game because that is what I prefer. If you prefer inverted controls than stick with it, it all boils down to what each of us is comfortable with anyway.

I just wonder if one day, the option to change to inverted will no longer be there though. Have you tried to go inverted? You might play better if you did. To why I suppose I should try non-invert and see if I play better in games. Of course it is gonna take some time, can't try for an hour and be "Nope, can't do it.". Just yeah I mean the whole, once you get use to the controls then see if you play better sorta deal I suppose.

In the first Halo game for the PC they give the option for it during the first section in the game, I tried it at that time and it felt weird to me. Despite that, in a flight sim game non inverted felt weird to me. Why that is may be a matter of both opinion plus knowing that a plane works that way. It may even be just how some of our brains are wired.

I don't believe you have anything to be concerned about in regards to control options. I believe most game makers know that we gamers like to have options for controls plus they're gamers themselves. I can relate to your concern about it, I feel similar when a game is made to only to be played by mouse and keyboard. I like it when there's an option to use a gamepad, I find it to be a wrist and forearm saver.

Well the link I added, it seems the Splinter-Cell Trilogy will have no option for inverted. So yeah... I never played the series but still. Hmm. I dunno I still think I am gonna try non-inverted for a bit longer. Thing I started to adjust to it playing a game with non-invert camera control.

I am now non-invert... mwahahaha! Heh, it is hard to imagine I was ever inverted now... heh. Now I see the confusion non-inverts have. But heh, those who bash on invert though just ain't right and being an asshole.

But yes... you know I never considered non-invert until recently when I started playing Shadow of the Colossus. If I had never got that game I never would've attempted non-inverted. Heh, I just decided to make that game my attempt at non-invert... I dunno why. Maybe since the controls by default were weird and awkward. How normal in there was actually invert and I dunno what but... heh yeah.

Anywho I am non-invert now, guess I am glad I did.

I can't stand inverted in any games on any axes, except inverted flight controls for pitch; not sure why. Probably because I don't play them much, but when I do, the controls are inverted by default and I've had no trouble with it.

As for any other game, I go from being pretty good to looking like I've never played a video game before if either axis is inverted. If I point in that direction, I don't want to go or look in the opposite direction.

I have always used inverted. I think that the main reason for people using inverted is either the aircraft control issue or the fact that the nintendo 64, the first widely popular 3d gaming platform, used inverted y-axis by default and couldn't be changed. So I just use inverted y axis for everything, it just feels natural. However, I have seen some games recently (resident Evil 5 for example) that as well as inverting the y-axis, they also let you invert the x-axis. Crazy, I know.

To be honest, I can never personally remember what I am more comfortable with...

sometimes I'll find non inverted to feel weird, swap to inverted, and find that to be even weirder
and then other times I find the reverse

i am inverted. i find that the feel is defined by two things.
1: is the analog stick a neck being tilted up and down?
or 2: is the analog stick a surface slider used to look in the pointed direction?

pfft. least you dont use an antiquated analog setup. i play "legacy controls", thats LEFT stick = move forward/back, turn left/right, RIGHT stick = strafe left/right, look up/down.
many games these days dont even support legacy.

I've never played a game where I was given the option to change the axes. At least, not that I remember. Most times, the camera just does what I want, or what it was programmed to do.

play any halo game. the intro brings you through a preferred axis inversion thing at the start. portal 2 also does this i believe.

i use non-inverted, mostly cus it'S kind of easier for me, most games i own don't even have a setting option for that and usually are non inverted

I think inverted is okay for aircrafts, eg. when you're pulling an airplane off the ground on a runway. But for looking up and down, sniping, changing camera position etc, I just find it disorientating.

Not if you don't want to. If you have the option to choose, I'd say choose the one you prefer. No point in playing with a configuration you find uncomfortable. :)

Heh well I been trying, just to see if I can. It is something I think all gamers should try now. To try the opposite. Not just for a few minutes or anything either, but enough time to where they get use to it. For me I am kind of at that in-between stage. Where gotten a bit use to non-invert but still not quite, and going back to invert I am a little messy on now.

As for the airplane thing which is a common comment I notice... heh I dunno how an analog stick works but, wouldn't pulling down on an analog stick, make the inside of the controller, the base, whatever works the analog stick, move up? And visa versa? So airplane or not, it is like an aircraft where you pull back on the stick and the base moves up.

I think it depends on how you view the camera. I think the reason I prefer non-inverted is because I think of moving the camera as 'pointing' at things. Eg, you point up to look up and point down to look down. If you look at it as moving the back of the character's head, as you've said before, then inverted makes more sense. Moving the lever up pushes the head down, and vice versa. What kind of video games do you like?

Heh I think that takes some skill to be able to do both at any moment. I wonder... if those use to inverted use the left side of their brain, which is the logical side... and those with non-invert use their right side of the brain which is the creative side. I dunno. Just those with non-invert immerse themselves in the world maybe and invert feel they control the character from a distance, which one does.

Yeah heh. You move your head from your neck so it is like... your neck has to be pulled back for your head to look up and so on. Also... I could be wrong but, the ironic thing is with an analog stick, when you push it up, doesn't the base, what's inside the controller, go down? Dunno how an analog stick works or anything but that is how I picture it working.

Thing is I have been trying non-invert a bit... I think I am at that awkward stage of being in between. Where I play inverted now and feels a bit off and non-invert still feels off but am adjusting.

Yeah sure same goes for your neckbones. They move into the opposite direction.
Sure you can train your brain to use non inverted.

Use what it feels the best to you. Doesn't matter inverted or not.

Usually non-inverted. Sometimes though, camera controls feel odd to me with default settings, and I need to invert. I think with Okami I needed to invert BOTH axes for some reason.

For me it changes based upon my experience, for example:
Solatorobo has standard controls for most of the game, but the flight mini-game has the default of inverted Y.  In this case, I need to shift the Y to standard because I have been playing the whole game that way (this is a 3rd person game).  However in flight games especially in cockpit view, I imagine my controller is a flight stick and it is easy to to use Y inverted.

In the N64 GoldenEye game, up on Y is up, but one setting has aiming on Y inverted; this to me makes no sense because EVERYWHERE ELSE in the game up on Y is up.  So when moving forward then activating aim makes the character look straight at the ground... This does not compute.

In short, it is not that I am incapable of understanding inverted Y, but the controls should not change within the same game because doing so makes the player have to relearn the precision that was learned from the standard controls.  This frustration is compounded by games where the inverted controls are only used during an extremely short period of time where the player must act quickly, such as aiming.

To answer your question about changing your Y: Why would you need that?  If it works for you it works.  As I stated above, the important part is that you can play your game.

Heh well to try is to see if I end up playing better with non-invert.

As for the Goldeneye thing... inverted is the default setting. In that link I posted, if you go to the Behind the Scenes of it, he says how Goldeneye had inverted as the default and no other game did it since. I loaded it up and it sure was inverted as default. I loaded up Duke Nukem 64, Perfect Dark, Turok 2 and Quake 2... the default for all of them is inverted, you can't even CHANGE that option in Turok, Duke and I think Quake.

So yeah I mean anyone who grew up on the n64 with FPS games like that... inverted was the default and to why I am a bit surprised by all the non-invert responses. I would think most gamers played during those days but I guess not.

Really old games were played with flight joysticks because that was the only controller option for computers. Because these controllers were based on flight controls, Y was inverted. However, since the PC version of the PSX controller, most games rely on standard controls.

Again, unless the game you want to play requires you to use a new different control type, I do not see how changing your style could positively affect your precession in the game. If you are used to one setting, as long as it is an option, you are probably better at it than the inverse of your preferred controls.

Heh well I have gotten kind of use to non-invert now. I try to do invert and it feels weird now. So heh yeah I guess I am getting use to non-invert. Seems two others I asked were the same... they use to play invert but then one day went non-invert and haven't went back since.

Unless I'm in an aircraft/controlling JUST the head of a character (like looking through their eyes in a 3rd-person) I prefer inverted. Other times I prefer it to go left when I point the stick left. On some of the older games I miss playing (epic sigh T_T ), if the game was MADE inverted and there is no option to change it back (or I just played it like that before I got so used to playing non-inverted) I can usually get over it. Like Sly Cooper. I just don't feel right changing it.

I don't see why it really matters, it's all just preferences. Don't get used to something you aren't comfortable with.

I could probably easily go back to inverted though. I don't think there is any harm in trying the opposite. It is probably worth trying for everyone to see if they can get use to the opposite than they are use to.

And yeah older games on N64 like Turok 2, default is inverted and you cannot change it I believe.

I think all of this comes from if you think the control of your in game head is from the front or back. If it's from the back, moving the mouse down would make the front of your head move up. But if it's the other way.. well it would be the other way.

For me, in an OS environment, you move the mouse up, the pointer moves up. So I use the same in video games. =)

Well it is easier with mouse to be non-inverted of course, since it is done all the time while you are on a computer. But anyway dunno if you read the other comments but yeah, those who grew up with the n64, inverted was the default, if not ONLY option, in a game. Such as Turok 2 and Conker.

Anyway I have kind of gotten use to non-inverted already. Only area where it feels a bit odd to do non-invert is camera movement in a 3rd person. Because you are behind him, not controlling him, so if you would wanna look up, the camera man would either have to kneel down or pull his head back and such like that but eh... hmm.

But anywho... yeah those who cannot wrap their minds around inverted with character control or otherwise... oh the shame and wee mind they must have... heh. I mean there is no need for them to be so one sided and dickheaded about it, those who do get that way. It is as bad as being a console fanboy boasting that their console is the best and disregard any logic or sense.
