Hamachi may cause Inkbunny access issues

Hi everyone

Some users have been reporting access problems since we moved to the new server.

We have found that in some cases those users have been using VPN software called Hamachi.

Because Hamachi breaks the Internet standards to do with the allocation of IP addresses, it may interfere with your ability to access Inkbunny.

Hamachi incorrectly allocates 5.x.x.x and 25.x.x.x IP addresses for its own private networks, which it should not be doing as this is against established standards for IP allocation. This conflicts with public sites that use IPs in those ranges.

Inkbunny now uses a 5.x.x.x address as its public IP address, so Hamachi will be in conflict with it.

This means if you have Hamachi installed, or ever had it installed but did not run a full uninstall, you may not be able to access Inkbunny or it may cause intermittent access problems.

Even though Hamachi updated to assign only 25.x.x.x addresses in current versions, it apparently still causes access issues to 5.x.x.x addresses such as Inkbunny uses.

Unfortunately we have no recommendations about how to fix the issue except to fully uninstall Hamachi using its own uninstall process. There may be configuration changes you can make in Hamachi to fix the problem but at this time we do not know of any.

Update: While we haven't had any reports of this that I'm aware of, Comodo's EasyVPN also used to use 5.x.x.x addresses, so it's also worth watching out for.

I installed it to play a multiplayer game that the friends I was playing it with no longer play. Uninstalled it goes!

It's actually a whole host of things but for the most part it is based on physical location. Your ip address is usually in the form of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and this tells you, if you don't mind digging through piles of endless data, what network the computer is going though and what computer you are looking at.

Got my hamachi running whenever my laptop is on, never had a problem accessing IB before or after the server move.

Would this new program be a bother on the mobile?
Because I use inkbunny on mobile 95% more then I use regularly on the computer itself

Well, instead of completely uninstall it, you could also set Hamachi so that it will only run when you want instead of at Windows startup.

Disclaimer:
Following this tutorial is at your own risk! I won't guarantee anything. You rather want to read each instruction triple times before doing them. Don't accuse me if something went wrong! Please only touch the process(es), service(s) and network adapter(s) described below and don't mess with the other ones.
This tutorial is written with the assumption that the reader has basic knowledge of how to use Windows 7. In case you  don't know where to find something, you know how to search for that information on the internet~! |=(;3

1) Close Hamachi UI completely first.
2) Set the LogMeIn Hamachi service on "Manual" instead of "Automatic" via services.msc, and stop the service.
3) Turn off "Hamachi Network Interface"-adapter via "Network and Sharing Center" > "Change Adapter Settings"
3) Prevent that Hamachi UI starts at startup. The easiest way to do so, is deactivating its startup entry with CCleaner via "Tools" > "Startup". You don't want to delete it, because it will be recreated at it's own state when you update Hamachi!.
4) Copypaste this batch script in Windows' Notepad as "Hamachi Start.bat" using the ANSI encoding.
5) Copypaste this batch script in Windows' Notepad as "Hamachi End.bat" using the ANSI encoding.

In case when you want to game with your friends over Hamachi, first turn on Hamachi's network adapter and run "Hamachi Start.bat" afterwards. When you've enough of gaming and want to visit IB again, first run "Hamachi End.bat" and turn off Hamachi's network adapter afterwards.

Don't forget that after each update of Hamachi you have to check if the installer has reset some settings which you altered with this tutorial. When that's the case, reapply the tutorial except step 4 and 5.

I still dunno why LogMeIn chose to use those IP blocks anyway, while at most home networks don't use 10.x.x.x and/or 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 while both blocks are reserved for Private/VPN networking.

A fishy thing is that 25.x.x.x is allocated to the UK's Ministry of Defence (DINSA).

What about any other VPN like PrivateInternetAccess? Some people use VPNs in different cases like when they need to use a public wifi spots.

Those should work fine if they're programmed correctly to handle addresses in the 5.x.x.x range!

There are still IPv4 only users on the internet.(For example, me. My ISP don't give a IPv6 adress to me.) If Inkbunny drop IPv4 support, they can't connect Inkbunny.

Same old story; because too many users don't have IPV6 capability, servers aren't willing to switch. My ISP is still IPV4-only, too. You'd think a server would have dual version support, though! *sighs* One of these days we'll start having connectivity issues as IPV4 runs completely out of addresses! And even then, servers will be reluctant to finally switch...

Anyway, I'm glad your change-over went smoothly for you.

Server admins can't do anything until ISP's switch to IPv6. Also we still have enough IPV4 adresses in the near future. We still have about 269 million IP adresses free.

If IPV4 runs out of addresses in the near future, It's IANA's fault. There are too many reserved adresses (about 1140 million) which is mostly unused.

Yes. IPv6 support is nice to have but doesn't really have a high priority in our task list, which is already very long. That said, we're considering the use of CloudFlare for other reasons, which should provide IPv6 support without any additional work.

About comodo's products, I use Comodo Unite, it assigns 5.xxx.xxx.xxx ip to your peers. I notice slowdowns while connecting inkbunny if I enable comodo's network adapter, so yes If you have a peer that uses 5.79.80.67 you can't connect Inkbunny.

Hamachi caused me problems with connecting a few times in the past already. I keep it uninstalled. There are only rare cases when I ever need it. When I don't, I'm happier without it.

I'm having the problem, but strangely only from my home internet connection. My iPhone can only access the site from it's 3G connection. I don't have Hamachi at all. :(

Can you provide details of your home Internet connection in a PM, maybe information from whatismyip.org and 'tracert inkbunny.net' at a command prompt?

We have reports of issues with Internet access via T-Mobile and are reaching out to them.

Sorry I was so slow to respond. Nothing goes past my isp's servers.  I've talked to them directly and they refused to unblock  the inkbunny IP address because  they think I'm trying to share files or something. :(

That's pretty stupid or lazy of them. Have they even tried pinging inkbunny.net? I mean, the IP address should show up at that point.

My suggestion would be to go further up the chain, send a complaint to a higher authority at the company. Failing that . . . get a new ISP, and tell them why.

They have the same issue plus porn blockers blocking the domain itself. Doesn't really matter to me anymore because I recently moved out of the area. I already spoke to the highest person they would let me contact and he pretty much blew me off. I just wish the guys who took things seriously were in charge there and hope no other site users had the same ISP.
