New notifications behavior

This is just a quick update about some recent changes! Full details about the latest site version will be announced in the next few days.

Please report any new bugs you see!

You may have noticed that we have made some small but dramatic changes to how the Notifications system works.

The numbers at the top of the screen in the menu bar that tell you about unread submissions/notices/PMs counts are now updated live.

So this means that any time you glance at those numbers, you know they are current without having to refresh the screen.

In addition, it will now tell you when you have new notifications that have come in since the page was loaded, so you don't have to memorize those numbers to see if there have been any changes. A little yellow marker will tell you how many it just added to that overall total.

The yellow marker will not go away until you view the page containing the list of those items (Notices page, New submissions page, etc).

The indicators will also dance and flash and generally get your attention.

This is all highly experimental and makes use of Scriptaculous and the new HTML5 storage system.

Some other changes have been made so we have less useless cookies and more useful HTML5 storage used instead where appropriate.

Full details coming soon!

Thanks

I agree, the flashing and shaking is a bit too obnoxious

for them being lit-up I suggest a slowly dimming and brightening

and remove the wiggling entirely

I like it

just a little thaught about another possible feature.... Is there like a SFW switch? like... click an SFW button somewhere on the page, refresh is and its all only SFW stuff, so you can check your inbox and if a younger sibling walks in, they wont have their mind blown by all the porn in my inbox XD

This is a nice change.

It was a bit glitchy at first (and might still be); the number of new notifications was appearing twice - once as expected towards the top of the page, and again directly underneath it as a small bit of text.  Firefox 21 if that's relevant.

Not sure if this should be filed as a bug or just my derpy internet

Okay, i'm on an ipad which doesnt run many scripts, and even after restarting my internet, it is still just shiwing the purple and orange stars and the words, but not the actual numbers of how many... I think thats just because iOS doesnt run many sctipts but i dont know... Is there a way to turn the update back off? XD

I'm really digging the sub-numbers on both Notes and New Submissions~

The only issue I've had so far is that new messages aren't alerted on tabs (at least in Firefox). I'll often sit one tab at https://inkbunny.net/portal.php to watch for when "(1)" pops up next to "Messages | Inkbunny". At the moment it doesn't seem to be doing that, though.

Maybe it's just me but, It's kind of hard to see the number within the yellow bubble due to the white part of the background, it turns more visible after scroll down a little bit till the bubble is set over the leaves, so my suggestion is moving the bubble a little bit to the right below or above the word "Submissions" where the tree trunk is.

yea.. it is

Also, the bubble that belongs to "Notices" should be moved above or below that word right on the tree trunk.

I've been getting blinking thumbnails on submissions when I refresh the page but it won't be every thumbnail, just one random one.

I'm not sure if this has been asked already, but is there ANY way whatsoever to turn off the blinking thumbnails?

Because I do have epilepsy and don't want to be triggered into a seizure (I am on meds for it, but having the option to turn off the blinking would be very helpful.)
XavierTehFurry

Yeah. It bothers me too. And I can see how it would trigger someone to go into a seizure. (I don't have epilepsy, but my Mother does, so I know how you feel).

Well thank you very much for understanding ;-; it just bothers me because I LOVE this site, why is the flashing necessary really?  Because when I see the flashing it makes my eyes blink quite a bit (which can lead up to the seizure), so now I have to shield my comp screen with my arm just to avoid being triggered :V  They REALLY should've thought about that before doing it.

No problem. Yeah, I know how it can be hard. :/

You do??? ;3;

Cause for me now it's like, unless they get rid of it (or give you an option) I'm gonna have to leave the site :C

My Mom has severe epilepsy where we had to give her a separate, customized computer. Brightness turned down and all that

Makes me feel lucky mine isn't that severe ;x; *hug*

I'm not a fan.

I mean, I like that the totals update in real-time.  I assume it means that they update without needing me to load a new page.  But the flashing is a little annoying.  I clear out my messages every time I visit the site (unless there's a journal I want to keep checking, but even then I only leave it for a few days or a week at most).  But every time I look at my new notices, they blink.  I can understand the use when you keep a bunch of stuff in there, but for someone who keeps his notices clean, it only serves as a minor annoyance.

Also, having the number of New Submissions in a yellow circle under the normal ribbon is redundant to those like me who always clear it out on each visit.

In other words, it would be nice if I could turn some of these things off.  The yellow circle and the flashing, mainly.  Still want to keep the real-time updates, but everything else is just redundant for me.

Any possibility of a tab or indent bbcode implementation for writers?

Neat!

I know this is a silly thing to think about, but I'm actually kind of curious if this will impact the battery life of a smartphone if the browser app is left on Inkbunny's.  That being said, I never particularly measured a difference with the portal.php page open on the first place; I've just been keeping it closed on the assumption that the whole...message-receiving thing will eat the battery. :I

I do like how it retains the new submissions when I nuke after going through the older ones, I won't miss anything by bad timing now ^-^

Not liking the flashy yellow stuff. I think it's slowing the page down for me too :/

The yellow flashing seems to have seen a lot of controversy, likely because it's such an in your face feature.  It's a useful feature yes, but one that has it's problems for some people and everyone would likely want to work different.  Likely what would be best would be to put some different options on the settings page to alter some of the behavior such as-

Turn on/off continuous flashing:I can see why some find this annoying (Perhaps even dangerous with epilepsy), but I would like either to turn on continuous flashing or have it flash longer.  Right now it flashes by too quickly now for me to get a great idea of what is new since the last load and what isn't.

Change flashing color:Everyone's monitor is a little different and some prefer things brighter or darker with their desktop themes and settings.  So the yellow that's perfectly acceptable for you might be too bright to another, while another might like a dark blue that others would think contrasts too much.  The option to change this helps allow users choose what's most comfortable for them.

The option to turn it off altogether:Some people may just hate this feature altogether, finding any sort of blinking distracting from their overall experience, or feel that something like that is slowing the page down.  Some people like to keep things simple.

For technical reasons I won't go into, I am forced to use an old version of Firefox (3.6) and cannot upgrade. This latest update has caused my browser to nearly stop working any time I go to IB. It's fine for all the other sites, just this one kills it. Having one tab containing IB causes frequent pauses in operation. Having more than one tab open causes delays of minutes.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

The new notifications don't work at all in the BlackBerry 10 browser. Not surprising, I suppose. however, if I look at them on my Q10, when I go back to my desktop the 'unviewed/new' count IS reset, so the site knows I've seen them.

A weirder issue: I normally clear out all my messages and submissions totally, but the 'new' total for messages never matches the number of new, unseen messages. It's usually one or two short.  The number for submissions is accurate.
