New notifications behavior

This is just a quick update about some recent changes! Full details about the latest site version will be announced in the next few days.

Please report any new bugs you see!

You may have noticed that we have made some small but dramatic changes to how the Notifications system works.

The numbers at the top of the screen in the menu bar that tell you about unread submissions/notices/PMs counts are now updated live.

So this means that any time you glance at those numbers, you know they are current without having to refresh the screen.

In addition, it will now tell you when you have new notifications that have come in since the page was loaded, so you don't have to memorize those numbers to see if there have been any changes. A little yellow marker will tell you how many it just added to that overall total.

The yellow marker will not go away until you view the page containing the list of those items (Notices page, New submissions page, etc).

The indicators will also dance and flash and generally get your attention.

This is all highly experimental and makes use of Scriptaculous and the new HTML5 storage system.

Some other changes have been made so we have less useless cookies and more useful HTML5 storage used instead where appropriate.

Full details coming soon!

Thanks

The flashing and shaking is annoying as fuck. Can I turn it off somehow?

Look at your messages? XD But yeah I can tone down the effects.

Restart your browser. :P Now the yellow marker just flashes once when new messages come in. No wiggles or repeated flashing.
Bianca

Can we disable the thumbnail flashing for new submissions?

It's... Obnoxious to say the least.
starling
5 years, 1 month ago
Yeah that was ugly. It just does the quick highlight now.
Bianca
5 years, 1 month ago
Is there a way to disable even that? <_<;;

I mean it's flashy and snazzy... Some of us stodgy folks prefer as little flair as possible xD

EDIT: personal preference aside, it's a marked improvement
starling
5 years, 1 month ago
Yeah I'm thinking of adding an enable/disable to flash and also to the yellow circled numbers.
Bianca
5 years, 1 month ago
The numbers are actually kinda neat. :D

They don't look too bad on the grey background. :3

And please do, it's not as bad as flashing for a solid second but CHANGE IS SCAREY :C

The ability to disable this would be nice ^_^  It's nice to have numbers that update in real time, but since I clear both the notices and submission sections every time I visit, it's a fairly pointless (and kind of annoying) feature
Lamia

I agree, the flashing and shaking is a bit too obnoxious

for them being lit-up I suggest a slowly dimming and brightening

and remove the wiggling entirely

I like it

just a little thaught about another possible feature.... Is there like a SFW switch? like... click an SFW button somewhere on the page, refresh is and its all only SFW stuff, so you can check your inbox and if a younger sibling walks in, they wont have their mind blown by all the porn in my inbox XD

nu nu nu, I mean like a really quick flip on and off... like... if there is an unexpected intrusion, just click the button, apposed to going to account, allowed ratings, clicking check marks, then hitting save
starling
5 years, 1 month ago
Get a lock for your door? xD

I can see how a quick option would be a bit easier but a single button in the interface to suddenly hide adult content is no better than alt+tab.

Going to your account settings for periods when you know you don't have enough privacy ensures you never have to remember to hit that button if someone barges in to your room.

okay ^^;

FA (yes, that crappy little site with currupt admins, loaded with trolls, and a number of other issues) has it, and that is one of the nifty little things that it has... like the only thing worth having that isn't here
but, I will stop pestering ^^
starling
5 years, 1 month ago
I just had a look and it does nothing different to changing your account settings. You still have to reload the page or run search again. It doesn't just suddenly hide porn content if someone walked up behind you.
soggymaster

This is a nice change.

It was a bit glitchy at first (and might still be); the number of new notifications was appearing twice - once as expected towards the top of the page, and again directly underneath it as a small bit of text.  Firefox 21 if that's relevant.
starling
5 years, 1 month ago
Can you take a screenshot? Also try clearing your cache and cookies and restart the browser to see if that fixes it.

I have yet to clear cache and cookies, or restart the browser since discovering this (been waiting to catch that screen).
starling
5 years, 1 month ago
That's working as it should. It's a bit redundant maybe but it's saying you have 1 new unread message of which there is 1 you haven't seen yet.
DarkestUmbreon
5 years, 1 month ago
Not sure if this should be filed as a bug or just my derpy internet

Okay, i'm on an ipad which doesnt run many scripts, and even after restarting my internet, it is still just shiwing the purple and orange stars and the words, but not the actual numbers of how many... I think thats just because iOS doesnt run many sctipts but i dont know... Is there a way to turn the update back off? XD
starling

Is there any way to see javascript errors in the browser? hmm
DarkestUmbreon
5 years, 1 month ago
Well, it's just the version of safari that comes standard in iOS devices... But they cant run havascript that i know of, so that is problably the problem
starling
5 years, 1 month ago
Are you able to fav submissions? That's something else that relies on Javascript so that would at least test that part of it. :P I'll get one of our staff to check the iPad version themselves.

I'm really digging the sub-numbers on both Notes and New Submissions~

The only issue I've had so far is that new messages aren't alerted on tabs (at least in Firefox). I'll often sit one tab at https://inkbunny.net/portal.php to watch for when "(1)" pops up next to "Messages | Inkbunny". At the moment it doesn't seem to be doing that, though.
starling
5 years, 1 month ago
Hmm that should work. It works for me anyway! You might find that some tabs update before others (they can take up to 60 seconds to catch up with each other). So if it seems like it should say (3 new) or whatever, just wait a while to see if it eventually updates.
Zapthechu
5 years, 1 month ago
Maybe it's just me but, It's kind of hard to see the number within the yellow bubble due to the white part of the background, it turns more visible after scroll down a little bit till the bubble is set over the leaves, so my suggestion is moving the bubble a little bit to the right below or above the word "Submissions" where the tree trunk is.
Anailaigh
5 years, 1 month ago
yea.. it is
Zapthechu
5 years, 1 month ago
Also, the bubble that belongs to "Notices" should be moved above or below that word right on the tree trunk.
starling
5 years, 1 month ago
I agree it's hard to see on some backgrounds (easier on the lighter ones of course). I'll try making the number bold perhaps. Updates will happen in the next few hours!

blinking notifications in the inbox are way too weird.

no need for it honestly.

I've been getting blinking thumbnails on submissions when I refresh the page but it won't be every thumbnail, just one random one.
starling
5 years, 1 month ago
We changed it to just quickly highlight each submission with a single yellow flash. Let me know if that works better!
NemoTVChampion
5 years, 1 month ago
I'm not sure if this has been asked already, but is there ANY way whatsoever to turn off the blinking thumbnails?

Because I do have epilepsy and don't want to be triggered into a seizure (I am on meds for it, but having the option to turn off the blinking would be very helpful.)
XavierTehFurry
5 years, 1 month ago
Yeah. It bothers me too. And I can see how it would trigger someone to go into a seizure. (I don't have epilepsy, but my Mother does, so I know how you feel).
NemoTVChampion
5 years, 1 month ago
Well thank you very much for understanding ;-; it just bothers me because I LOVE this site, why is the flashing necessary really?  Because when I see the flashing it makes my eyes blink quite a bit (which can lead up to the seizure), so now I have to shield my comp screen with my arm just to avoid being triggered :V  They REALLY should've thought about that before doing it.
XavierTehFurry
5 years, 1 month ago
No problem. Yeah, I know how it can be hard. :/
NemoTVChampion
5 years, 1 month ago
You do??? ;3;

Cause for me now it's like, unless they get rid of it (or give you an option) I'm gonna have to leave the site :C

My Mom has severe epilepsy where we had to give her a separate, customized computer. Brightness turned down and all that

I'm not a fan.

I mean, I like that the totals update in real-time.  I assume it means that they update without needing me to load a new page.  But the flashing is a little annoying.  I clear out my messages every time I visit the site (unless there's a journal I want to keep checking, but even then I only leave it for a few days or a week at most).  But every time I look at my new notices, they blink.  I can understand the use when you keep a bunch of stuff in there, but for someone who keeps his notices clean, it only serves as a minor annoyance.

Also, having the number of New Submissions in a yellow circle under the normal ribbon is redundant to those like me who always clear it out on each visit.

In other words, it would be nice if I could turn some of these things off.  The yellow circle and the flashing, mainly.  Still want to keep the real-time updates, but everything else is just redundant for me.
starling
5 years, 1 month ago
Notices should only flash once yellow when they are new and you haven't seen them in the list before. Then they will stay in the list and never flash again.

Is it flashing the same ones every time you load the notices page?
Zeikcied
5 years, 1 month ago
I guess it's not so bad now.  I still think the number with the yellow circle underneath the ribbons is redundant, and ugly, and would love to turn that off.  It's a blight on an otherwise good looking page.  The blinking only happened the first time that specific item was viewed, like it should, but it was still annoying to see stuff flash every time I viewed my notices page.  I know which ones are new, I don't need the new items to flash every single time.  That's the annoying part.
starling
5 years, 1 month ago
Yeah I think we'll add options to disable both those functions. I think it depends very much on how people use their notices, etc. Some people clear them completely on every viewing multiple times a day. Other people let their notices fill up and are upset they get auto cleared after 6 months. I guess the yellow marker and number is more useful to people who tend to keep old notices around for a while!
Zeikcied
5 years, 1 month ago
It would also be nice if the New Submissions page would auto-update like the Notifications page, so I don't have to click the ribbon a second time to see the newer submissions.

Any possibility of a tab or indent bbcode implementation for writers?
starling

Neat!

I know this is a silly thing to think about, but I'm actually kind of curious if this will impact the battery life of a smartphone if the browser app is left on Inkbunny's.  That being said, I never particularly measured a difference with the portal.php page open on the first place; I've just been keeping it closed on the assumption that the whole...message-receiving thing will eat the battery. :I
starling
5 years, 1 month ago
No extra battery usage. We don't transfer very much info per check. :D It's still checking for new updated info as often as it always did, so even if the regular checks have any battery life impact, it will be the same as before the update. The difference is just that it now gets info about notices in the same request, and not just site upgrade message.

Your browser will check back with Inkbunny for new notices, etc every 2 minutes (no matter how many tabs you have open, the whole browser will only check every 2 minutes). If you have the Notices page open, it will check every minute.

I do like how it retains the new submissions when I nuke after going through the older ones, I won't miss anything by bad timing now ^-^
starling
5 years, 1 month ago
Yeah nuking always affects only the submissions/notices up to the time that page was generated. That way anything that came in a few seconds or minutes later that you missed doesn't go BOOM. As you noticed. xD

Not liking the flashy yellow stuff. I think it's slowing the page down for me too :/
Cyberblade
5 years, 1 month ago
The yellow flashing seems to have seen a lot of controversy, likely because it's such an in your face feature.  It's a useful feature yes, but one that has it's problems for some people and everyone would likely want to work different.  Likely what would be best would be to put some different options on the settings page to alter some of the behavior such as-

Turn on/off continuous flashing:I can see why some find this annoying (Perhaps even dangerous with epilepsy), but I would like either to turn on continuous flashing or have it flash longer.  Right now it flashes by too quickly now for me to get a great idea of what is new since the last load and what isn't.

Change flashing color:Everyone's monitor is a little different and some prefer things brighter or darker with their desktop themes and settings.  So the yellow that's perfectly acceptable for you might be too bright to another, while another might like a dark blue that others would think contrasts too much.  The option to change this helps allow users choose what's most comfortable for them.

The option to turn it off altogether:Some people may just hate this feature altogether, finding any sort of blinking distracting from their overall experience, or feel that something like that is slowing the page down.  Some people like to keep things simple.

For technical reasons I won't go into, I am forced to use an old version of Firefox (3.6) and cannot upgrade. This latest update has caused my browser to nearly stop working any time I go to IB. It's fine for all the other sites, just this one kills it. Having one tab containing IB causes frequent pauses in operation. Having more than one tab open causes delays of minutes.

Does anybody have any suggestions?
starling
5 years, 1 month ago
Are you on a PPC? There are special versions of the latest Firefox built for it. I can hunt it down if that's the reason you can't upgrade.
VernonOnFM
5 years, 1 month ago
While it is not a processor issue, but it is a combination of hardware and software. As I said, they are technical issues I won't go into. I am hoping somebody might know what settings I can change, either on the site or with my current browser, which might improve the problems.
Thank you, though, for the offer.

The new notifications don't work at all in the BlackBerry 10 browser. Not surprising, I suppose. however, if I look at them on my Q10, when I go back to my desktop the 'unviewed/new' count IS reset, so the site knows I've seen them.

A weirder issue: I normally clear out all my messages and submissions totally, but the 'new' total for messages never matches the number of new, unseen messages. It's usually one or two short.  The number for submissions is accurate.
starling
5 years, 1 month ago
If you never see the little yellow overlay numbers, then it means the browser doesn't support HTML5 storage. But that would be strange as a quick check shows that browser should do HTML5. Unfortunately we don't officially support mobile devices  as we simply have no way to test them all. So some site functionality is likely to be broken.
