I strongly agree with the sentiment: it's entirely OK to associate with none of the traditional genders, or all of them, and arguing whether one gender is better or worse is rarely a good thing, and is typically only divisive and destructive.
But insisting that there're only N genders hasn't usually worked out well for people who don't feel comfortable as any one of that limited number of genders. Reducing N to 1 seems like a nice idea, but just exacerbates the problem, rather than resolving it.
Same with species, race, and any other social grouping. There will always be those who want to be "other": who don't *want* to identify with the crowd.
And it's a pointless truism to say "some people will always be unpleasant about social division: this is unpleasant."
So instead, I'd just phrase it as: "Some people identify with a specific gender. And that's fine, too."

The existence of gender distinctions is one of the few things that can really get me angry. Not in a "gendered people are evil" sort of way but in a "oh god this isn't the sort of world I want to live in" sort of way. To me it's on par with "people that enjoy hurting other people" and "people that want to steal things" in terms of annoyance.

I don't understand why gender distinctions are any worse than any other social grouping? I mean, I don't think anyone has a problem with there being goths, emos, geeks, etc, as social groups. Similarly, redheads, brunettes, bald people, mohawks; just another social grouping. Gender, to me, feels like that; a group you fall in identify as.
I guess there's the aspect that it's not something (like hair colour or dress style) that you choose, but instead (like sexuality, skin colour, name, language and religion) something bestowed on you, deliberately or otherwise, by your parents. And of that list, it's one of the harder ones to change.
Still, I have various friends who disagree with the group they were assigned to at birth, and have opted to move to a different one, or to androgyny.
