Question of the Day

by
this is just something I've always felt...that many artists get popular from doing ONE thing

whether they be Ponies, Sonic, Macros, WS, hyper or whatever

I feel I sometimes set myself at a disadvantage by doing many different subject matter, as fans of one particular thing may not like/follow the other 90% of the stuff I do and so may not get watched as easily...

It's funny also how people try to pigeonhole me, like someone once said Im the guy who draws dragons....or that's my forte, but I hardly do that many dragons

what do you guys think?  do you prefer an artist who does only one theme or subject (and think about who you watch and if its for the one thing they draw)?

A diverse portfolio of things being drawn is my preference. I notice that when an artist draws the same thing over and over and over and over again, they actually never improve, and sometimes, they get worse.

discussed this tonight...there's one artist who does hyper stuff who is very popular, yet his art is crap compared to what he did just a few yrs ago...Now he totally draws big muscular guys and big dicks and is very far removed from the talent he showed in more diverse things a few yrs ago, as people have pointed out....

My argument was that if people were paying him to do crap art which can be done in a much quicker time...eh go for it?

I like it when someone finds what they are good at and sticks with it.
Muscular chicks with guns?  Dynamic action poses?  Dragons?  Other winged birds, mammals, reptiles, etc?  Cartoon characters with a slice of not serious?  Doesn't matter to me.

Yeah, but I'd think this was boring for the artist?  Again, see above, if your getting paid to draw crap, I can see the enticement

A few of the artists I had in mind at the time don't draw exclusively those subjects; it just happens to be what they draw the most.

im totally not faulting people who specialize in what they love...i admire them actually...its just some draw crap because people pay them to draw crap....that irks me

I like it when an artist shows they can do more than just one thing. Sure it is nice to find an artist that does one style VERY well but it is also nice to see an artist branch out into new things.

but see I am frankly all over the place...I am setting up the new gallery on my webpage now and have to do very broad categories like digimon, pokemon, disney, etc to have galleries with more than 2-5 pieces in them over the last 2 yrs with over 500 submissions..and even those have at most like 10-20 works in those categories.

My question is, does this harm me from popularity?

I really don't think it does.

I think you're the artist that does requests and tries lots of different stuff.

yes, but do you think this harms my popularity?

That you're a go-to artist for getting custom stuff done?  No, I think it helps.

It's boring to do one thing. Everyone should know that and should do everything that THEY like, not what they are just paid for.

i would agree with that, but the question is when your doing whatever tickles your fancy that week, does this make people not want to commission or watch you who may like very narrow things?
wolfpup

It should not, As there are always people willing to commission. You could put it in your information of what you do  like or what you dislike.

eh theres very little i dislike....scat and adult on cub would come to mind.

but the whole question im asking is do you favor specializing in the things you like or people who do a lot of crazy stuff XD

Im mostly a chipmunk fan, however, im open to some stuff.. so diversity is what i like.

I also try to draw many different things (with some being my favorite of course). so far it is working rather well.

Most important is that you have fun. Of only ponies are fun for you draw only ponies.
