I try not to get political in this space, as I want to be a refuge from all the ugliness of the world. But with Substar's recent TOS changes the walls are closing in around our industry. Things are getting dire, and if you're in the US we need your help.
The Federal Reserve (the organization that regulates banks and such) is asking for public comments on a proposed regulation. The regulation would make it harder for companies like Visa and Mastercard to refuse to do business with sites for arbitrary reasons, such as those sites hosting adult content they don't like.
Payment processors have done incredible damage to our industry already, they got NSFW games delisted/removed from Steam and Itch, and they've forced Patreon and Substar to restrict the types of content that I've been allowed to bring to you. And we have no reason so expect them to stop there. There may likely come a day when Visa and Mastercard try to ban ALL NSFW content that they can, just like how they tried with Onlyfans.
This is where YOU come in. If you could please spare 2 minutes of your time, go to the link below and leave a comment on the Federal Reserve's website, telling them you SUPPORT THE PROPOSED PROHIBITION. Please be kind, be respectful, and most importantly MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD.
Comments are made public, but you may remain anonymous if you wish. I've already left my own comment, and if you're in the USA please leave your own.
If we don't come together now, we may lose everything we've worked so hard to build.
I have left my comment. I am glad to support! It is such a disgrace that these big money corporate elitists get to run the world! Let us have some escapism!
I kept mine civil, but I really wanted to say more. I am a big proponent of 'eating' a certain type, but I will bite my tongue for now.
Good luck to you, Bacn! love your work!

Financial institutions should not, and can not be the arbiters of what is morally acceptable. The ability for banks and credit companies to deny service to people and companies due to a vague, broad concept such as 'reputation risk' with no legal grounds opens the door to discrimination of the worst kind. Continuing to allow this risks financial institutions becoming the unelected architects of society. In the modern day where so much of common commerce depends on digital payment processing and card-based transactions, banks and credit processors have a disproportionate amount of power over the populace. Allowing them to exploit that power for arbitrary political or moral reasons under the guise of undefined 'reputational risk' can not be allowed. We are not talking about illegal activities, for which a legal process of denial is already established. We are talking about opinions and purchase histories a CEO or board of directors disagree with. People have trusted banks and credit processors to safeguard their money and act as neutral facilitators of commerce, but it is clear that without enforcement of that neutrality, these companies will abuse the power they are given by customers who often have little choice in who to entrust their financial stability to.
My comment. Financial institutions should not, and can not be the arbiters of what is morally accep
The problem is that people assume that the political philosophy optimists are correct when their opposites are (at best) closer to the money in general.
So start at Hobbes's 'humans are flawed' assumptions on the human condition and go from there.
There is also the problem that people keep thinking that the freer the freedoms, the freer the people, when historically it's been the opposite, when adjusted for the available tech and understanding of the universe of the time. The sad reality, then, is that we have to put our freedom-maximal mentality behind the shed and put it down like a rabid dog.

Would this actually effect payment processors and the like at all? The proposal summary reads like it would only prohibit the board of the Federal Reserve system itself from discrimination based on reputation risk, not the banks and companies themselves. Still a good thing, but possibly not as huge a win as hoped if it passes?

The proposal would remove 'reputation risk' from the federal regulations. While banks can still follow their own individual regulations, this proposal would remove the grounds for debanking someone to avoid federal regulation, and instead shifts the focus to actual financial risks. Effectively, it makes the justification of 'reputation risk' a lot more shaky as an excuse, and makes it easier for individual banks to offer services to people engaging in legal but unpopular activities (political groups, gun shops, pornographic websites) without having to be in lock-step with other banks due to less regulation from the Federal Reserve on reputational grounds.

I wish i could but i'm stuck in the Socialist Cuntry of Cucknada... (Yes, the misspelling is intentional). The only ways, they'll stop if 1) They're forcefully nationalized... (Might create more problems) Or 2) The US removes the regulations to obstruct the creations of alternative credit companies... (Doubt that'll ever happen...)
But hey, maybe things are about to move in the right directions...
