PSA: "Dopamine fasting" is unhealthy and doesn't work.

First a disclaimer, I'm not a therapist and this is not a substitute for therapy.

So dopamine fasting is an idea that I'm seeing a few people on Youtube talk about, usually in the context of video games. The idea is that if you reduce your dopamine levels, you decrease your tolerance to dopamine and such activities become more enjoyable. You can see why this idea has started to take off. Just one problem. It is NOT POSSIBLE to lower your tolerance to dopamine. Not only that, but a lack of dopamine can lead to health problems. Abstaining from all pleasurable activity is NOT healthy.

The concept this came from was meant to limit problematic activity, like pursuing a specific pleasurable activity at the expense of everything else, (what some call "addiction") or compulsive behavior like checking social media every 2 minutes. It IS healthy to set a comfortable and regular timed abstention from problematic activity, (you don't have to give it up completely) and to replace that activity with something else you enjoy rather than purposefully induce boredom. You can also set a certain time or times to do that activity, such as checking social media for a set amount of time after meals. This won't directly make anything more enjoyable, but it does reduce stress and gives you more time for those other activities.

You're correct. Trying to artificially create a state of anhedonia is not only a bad idea, but dangerous. It risks bringing on a increased state of depression, and could lead to suicidal ideation. I suffer from chronic depression and sometimes the anhedonia  is so bad I want to go catatonic and just withdraw into a dark void in my head while wishing for death to come and just get it over with. It is not a state of mind anyone wants to court. Trust me.

While I am not an advocate for behavioral therapy that does not address the root causes of addiction, taking responsibility and getting help and support for addiction(s) are the best solutions. If it is not addiction you are trying to address and if you are looking to re-acquire the "newness high" (novelty?) of engaging in pleasurable activities there are much more positive solutions. Moderation is helpful, and say letting a game rest for a short while to prevent burnout is fine, it is better served to add new activates and hobbies than engage in personal prohibition.

In other words everything DB just said.

I was really close to trying dopamine fasting, but family and friends have instead suggested I consider seeking diagnoses (like ADHD). I REALLY struggle with regulation... It's rare to hear much dissenting input but I appreciate multiple perspectives!

Yeah I was about to try it myself, wondering if there'd be a difference, and started looking up best ways to go about it, alternative activities, etc, but then thankfully I stumbled on other sources saying "yeah don't do that"
