I will not pretend I know much about Charlie Kirk. Truth be told, I know very little about US politics, and I've generally been trying to avoid politics in general - for the sake of my mental health. However, I do feel somewhat obligated to make a statement on this matter, based on what I know about what transpired.
I would not say I am necessarily right wing, or left wing really, but I feel that it is - or should be - an uncontroversial statement to make that the murder of Charlie Kirk was unacceptable. I do not feel it is justified to kill a political opponent, outside of self defence - which this clearly wasn't. What kind of lunatic shoots a man in such a cowardly way? The fact that the perpetrator hasn't been caught unsettles me, but what unsettles me more is the precedent this sets.
Some would argue the precedent that assassinations are on the table when Nancy Pelosi's house was attacked, and some extremists celebrated the event. I condemn that, and I condemn any celebration of Charlie Kirk's death. I do not have to agree with someone to think that they shouldn't be shot, and I really hope this is a common sentiment.
All we can do is hope that there aren't retaliation attacks, although I wouldn't be too surprised if there are. Hopefully, we can at least find common ground on this issue, for the sake of decency. In these polarising times, the best way to rebuke the extremists is to work together. Condemn this murder like you would the murder of your own figures, because I know full well you would condemn the murder of the likes of Kamala Harris.
We do not have to agree to get along. We are, hopefully, all reasonable people. As reasonable people, we should not celebrate this murder. Murder is not a good thing, I hope this is not controversial to say.
