I've once heard of an attempted blackmail situation years ago. I'll use fictional names as not to reveal actual people.
One night, Willy and some of his friends trespassed onto a construction site, broke into a gang box and stole some power tools.
A week later, an older neighbor, Andy, asked Willy to give him $100.
Willy told Andy, "You gotta be crazy. What makes you think I'm gonna give you $100 ?"
Andy replied, "Well then... Looks like I'll have to go to the police and tell them about those power tools you and the boys stole off that construction site".
About that time, another neighbor, Charley, said to Andy, "Woah, hold on there. That's blackmail. You can get in trouble for that".
Another neighbor, Joe, told Andy, "Don't you know blackmail is a felony in this state".
Andy said, "Do WHAT?...A felony?...I didn't know blackmail was even a crime. I always thought the police considered it a favor by letting them know a bad guy did something wrong, and they don't care if you're blackmailing the bad guy because by doing wrong he deserves it".
Charley said, "No no no, Andy. It don't work that way".
Joe further told Andy, "You might get in more trouble for blackmailing than Willy would for stealing those construction tools".
Andy says, "Damn...And I thought I could have got a quick hundred off that boy".
