Well, so much for my Tablet.

A few weeks ago my tablet stylus broke. I was able to get it working again, but I wanted a new pen. This isn't exactly a breeze, as I have a 15 year old Cintiq I bought off Danaume as she was upgrading a decade ago. Research was inconclusive so I reached out to Wacom directly and the rep was very nice and helpful and found me one that he said would work, though he did gently suggest I buy a newer tablet instead. I told him that was in the cards for the future but I wasn't ready for that right now. Then I went and put the same info into Amazon and bought the pen there.

And thank goodness I did because the pen does not work. And not only does it not work, but during the flurry of troubleshooting and driver updates, the tablet stopped working too: Instead of acting like a screen tablet, it now acts like a non-screen tablet with the stylus actions being reflected onto my main monitor. When I attempted to check the driver with the shiny new driver manager they got me to install, I got a message saying "Your Wacom device is no longer supported by this driver. Please consider an upgrade to a newer Wacom product."

So basically, 'fuck you', I guess.

Well, I needed a new tablet anyway, there have been a lot of advancements in the last 15 years, and I swear the pressure sensitivity on my current tablet has been going down in the last several years. I'm looking into a replacement and to be totally honest, I'm not really looking hard at a new Wacom. Heard good things about XPPen and I'm leaning towards that.

You might be able to find the (original) drivers for your tablet online somewhere!

Can you give me the details of its model number/etc?

Also, HUION is a pretty great (and affordable) brand that a lot of people get when they can't afford fancy cintiq screen tablets.. :o)

I'm pretty sure that I have an old set of drivers on an external hard drive from a time when the tablet would forget how to work about once a month. I'm not especially too worried about getting the drivers, it's mostly the whole of everything around the driver situation. I'd like a stylus that will work with my tablet and isn't held together with superglue, f'rinstance.

And thanks for the recommendation, I'm going to look into Huion. :)

Yes, this has been my experience with Wacom.  Pen (and nib) compatibility is a problem, their drivers only support newer tablet models, and drivers collect telemetry in the background which on my old Win7 system caused a HUGE amount of lag.  Even now, I use a tablet driver from 2012, which is the newest one that actually works with my Intuos One.

I don't recommend Wacom.  Too expensive, and support sucks.

I just bought a Huion Kamvas Gen3 and was pleased to find out it still supports Win7, and can work with either HDMI or USB3.  It's a solid piece of hardware, though I haven't tried using it yet.  I'm in the process of moving from Win7 to Linux, so testing and reviewing my tablet has been a low priority.

Thanks, Wac. The whole thing is really annoying. I should look into a Huion too before I pull the trigger on this, especially since there are two recommendations in this comment section already.

Oh, the irony.  I've just spent the last few hours trying to get my Huion tablet to work with new drivers, old drivers, and OpenTabletDriver.  It has power and shows the splash screen with the company logo, but shows no HDMI connection, USB connection, or activity of any sort.  No matter what I do on either my desktop or laptop, it just immediately goes right into power save mode.

So far, I am really not impressed.  There's no diagnostics of any sort, so I'm at a loss.  I'll have to try this on a few other computers.

Never mind.  I was stupid and had the cable hooked up wrong.  I can't believe I did that all day!

Man if this ain't the tech/IT life... You're basically qualified to work an end user support job now lol.

Yeah, totally not surprised. I've a tablet Wacom abandoned the drivers for ages ago. Basically only still works because of a shareware developer supporting it. Of course I never actually do anything with the tablet. But was very disappointed in things.

This seems to be a common thing among the people I'm talking to about this; "Wacom's been getting shittier and shittier for a while". I guess it says something about me that I haven't had a reason to notice this yet.
