SoFurry is now gone.

by
An addendum to my previous journal (my most-read journal in years, BTW), that this morning, SoFurry is offline, and it's indeterminate whenever SoFurry NEXT will ever be back online as its replacement.

A major loss to the furry community.

I knew it was coming eventually. I stopped using SoFurry earlier this year, because I was seeing fewer and fewer people using it, but to see it's going down completely is sad. It's the site where I used to host all of my writing stuff.

When they banned cub content back around.... 2015? ....they lost a lot of traffic, and never fully recovered from the loss. The frequent server crashes over the years didn't help, either.

But it was still active. Can't say that about many other furry associated sites, except for IB and FurAffinity.

Only good thing I can say about SF's crashes is the "squirrels eating cables" pic they'd use, that despite the vulpine-based logo, it seemed as if squirrels were the "official" mascots of the site.

But with the host increasing rent to a point they couldn't afford, it became inevitable. If they hadn't squandered the time they had in development with SF NEXT, and not having been stuck in Beta for several years, they could've been much better prepared, even already transitioned to the new SoFurry well before now.

So, you could let others know.  If there is a story someone wants off SF most of them are still available including cub ones but now I'm not sure for how long.

For now I guess save the stories you truly want to be able to read again.
Sadly those that actually took down there work or altered it are not available but those that SF forced into drafts (I.E. older artist who never responded to the change) are available to read.

Can't do much about the artwork but if it isn't on I.B. E621, or other places someone probably has it saved somewhere.

For me, I'll simply have to learn to take SoFurry out of my regular cycle of checking websites, but it was also a matter of SoFurry being the oldest furry website I still followed. Besides, having only 288 followers, my own message isn't going to get very far.

Like a star that begins to run out of fuel at the end of it's lifetime...Gravity took over and then it collapsed.

They seemed more interested in playing games and hosting game servers that getting the Beta ready, over the past 5 years.

I was just barely using SoFurry, but this doesn't look good.

No it doesn't, and I was following you there as here.

I honestly never understood the site. I got very little attention there. Your posts here are the only reason I knew it was going down for a while.

I don't think too many ever paid much attention to SoFurry's notifications. Since I checked in every day to follow some ongoing stories (and save to epub, to read offline), and there was literally one week between notice and shutdown, I was aware of what was happening. They were caught with their pants down, completely unprepared, which if they had been much more active in developing the next iteration of SoFurry, they might've been prepared. They weren't. Preparing for integration of old and new sites, especially the size of SoFurry, requires months of advance work and planning.

I wonder why they change host much less why this whole big change?

Others were asking the same, but got no reply before shutdown.

First Yiffstar and now this....

What's Next?

There were two versions of Yiffstar and two versions of SoFurry, before this collapse. The third version never got out of beta, now it's being forced into being the new official version of SoFurry, without being ready. As I said elsewhere above, not very promising circumstances.

Over two weeks and still down.  Sad to see it go but they kept making bad moves for the last decade that led to their decline.  There was a lot of good stories and artwork posted there from creators now retired.

I should have backed up my few crap stories I posted on there but it isn't like I could bring them over to this platform due to the no human involvement sex rule.

Based on my experience with sites moving servers, a well-planned move would take at least two weeks. This was not planned or expected. They had one week to work out the pre-move plans (this usually takes months!), then on shutdown, start moving two databases (user accounts and submissions), and then integrate both into a new system that is still not in a usable state, and make it usable..... Two months, minimum.

SoFurry NEXT would've long been done if they hadn't put it on the backburner and played on their game servers........ Now, they have 7 years of catching up to do..... And because it wasn't ready, expect wholesale database transfer failures, which is more common than you think....

I'm inclined to call SoFurry a loss, and a tragic one at that...

Very much so.  I've worked IT in the past and one thing that most newbs learn is to have a second machine setup and migrate the software and database to that before full launch.  From everything I've seen, this wasn't done.  This just adds to the dumb moves they keep piling on that killed the website.

I wish those geniuses had allowed furry search engine to be a backup archive site, instead of a link site to sofurry

With a link to play a game, no less. Demonstrates their priorities......

To this day, you still can't type in foreign languages. It was surprisingly more archaic than Furaffinity.

All because, in the beginning, all they could support was 7-bit ASCII, and it's been kludge after kludge after kludge, that I don't think they're capable of fixing that. At least the epub export worked, and did support some languages.
