I read a Wikipedia article on the history of firecrackers. Starting around 200 BC, ancient Chinese found out by tossing bamboo stems into a fire, the air inside the hollow sealed sections would expand until the bamboo stems exploded with a loud bang. It was 700 years later they invented black powder and made real firecrackers.
