You know what's kinda sad?

.... Disappearing Characters, especially adopted ones.

Its always a sad thing when a prominent character disappears, and in the context of Inkbunny, that'd be characters that have been around for a long time and suddenly poofed one day when the artist left or disappeared, or characters that have been adopted but never see the light of day there after.

In the case of the former, I wish their owners the best and hope things are going well for them. At best they decided to leave the fandom for some reason or another, or at worse they might be gone. I'm sure many of us miss these individuals, and some of us are blessed enough to continue maintaining some semblance of their presence by commissioning art of their characters (Like how many of you have done so for Bulletsoup and recently Ethersaga, and in my case how i'm doing the same for Dirtypawz and Foulcritter).

In the case of the latter, it sort of feels like... a waste of potential of what the character could have been? Like some of the designs i've seen for characters that get adopted are REALLY good, but then they fade into obscurity shortly after, and usually on accounts that have little or no artwork posted at all on them. I don't understand why people would adopt an OC if they weren't going to do anything with them. 9.9;

I don't know why but this suddenly popped into my head a moment ago, probably because i'm in a crummy mood or something. Or going loopy. Either or is a possibility.

I probably should sleep. :P

I can think of another reason a character might disappear. One more personal to... ongoing things, for myself. I maintained a character list of all of my characters that I played with my partner... 105 over the span of our 11 years together. Now, they have all lost their other half, just as I have and, what's more, they've lost the worlds they lived in, the stories they were telling, because I'm not sure I can bear to tell it on my own.

I underwent something similar and I know the feeling all too well. But I decided to go the happier route and continue their legacy.

But i understand the feeling. It just isnt the same without their input.

Commissions cost money, sometimes you adopt one and the story you wanted to use it for just never comes together.

Sometimes I really like how a particular artist draws a particular character and they just vanish unexpectedly. Sometimes I can't find the right artist for a particular plot. And sometimes I find there's some bigger opportunity to jump to, like an artist I've wanted to commission for ages suddenly becoming available after a long time.

But indeed, some characters are excellent and it's a pity to see them go unused.

Another I'd add to your list is
Passpartou
Passpartou
's Amanda:
Amanda Scratch info by Passpartou
Sometimes I still see people draw her.

Perhaps one issue here is that one of etiquette, maybe giving characters from owners that are gone a bit more life could be a good thing? But it's one of those things that could lead to a lot of drama.

By the way! I do have a few idle characters, and people are very much welcome to ask if they'd like to do something with them!

Characters I have no sheets for may also be available, I'm always up for at least a chat.

Oof I know that feeling too well. Commissions are starting to become an expensive hobby. I wish i had more time and energy to draw again. But I also know how it feels to get a piece from an artist i've been eyeballing. I do look back on my own gallery fondly to see some pieces. ^^

Yeaaaah I remember her feline... can't believe its been almost 9 years already. Others are also GBB/Ketzio's characters, Delicious's characters, then there was Sashabelle.

Such a fun character.

I have no room to talk here, because I'm extremely guilty of letting characters lie fallow. But yeah, I agree. In the case of folks who have vanished for whatever reason, it is to be hoped they can one day find their way back again. Even if just to say hi now and then. For those who have passed on, well everyone's wishes about that are different, of course, but it's heartening to know that the love for someone's creations doesn't cease when they do.

As for adoptees who just never get used, well as I say, I'm guilty of that, myself, if getting better. But yeah, it's a shame to see designs hoarded away and never used, when they could have been great. I just have to hope that some of them are being used in other ways than art, like those characters I adopted here or on the other site then worked into my novels.

Hope you can get some rest and the world looks a little brighter afterward.

Several characters I loved got lost these ways. A pony named Love Money from Doodlies/Maim was the most tragic to me. I liked her.

There's also the whole cast of Jurassic Beauties by Fossil, a monkey girl, and a set of Passion Puppies the original creator just bleached from the internet.

The snake girl Julia was owned by Krezz. Rest in peace.

Oh man i haven't seen Fossils name mentioned in a long time. Hope to see them on your gallery some time tho ^^

But yeah i have something similar.  A piny OC named moody blues. I just need to make his cutie mark and he'll be ready to go. xD

This is the biggest reason I never adopt characters.  With Bailey being the lone exception of course.  But I already have quite the roster of characters as is.  Its expensive enough to get the art I already get but many characters fall to the wayside.  Cali and Zoe hardly see the light sadly for example.  I'd love to continuously get art of them all but I cant afford to do so and still eat lol.  Even staple characters like Claire never see the light these days.

It also bothers me when people get adoptables seemingly just to collect them.  Like each character is a card or something.   Too many no icons snatch them up and are never seen or heard from again.  Must be annoying somewhat for artists especially.

As someone guilty of buying way too many adopts I think the main issue I have is that it's usually the no icons that buy them and literally don't even make it their icon ._.

I can't say anything because I'm guilty of letting adopts fall unused but also I at least use them in some respect even if people don't see it I guess.

Yeaaaaah i seem to notice that. As far as artists goes.. It depends. Half of then don't think much once a character is sold, the other half (like MakoRuu) DO care where their creations went.

... Also NGL i'm glad you adopted Bailey. Otherwise with how nearly all your characters are cats, I'd float up the suggestion to title the gallery "Pussy Galore" =333

put it really nicely, and profoundly enough that I get a mental image of lava lamps every time I think about my cast of characters now.

As long as they see use, give emotion, forward a story... then the shape one's creativity takes is malleable.

I'm also with

here in that some collectors just snatched adopts up in droves to never see daylight again.  Glad the artist gets compensation but... is sad to see wasred potential.

I'm glad that comment made an impression for you Eclypse. :o) I was actually about to give this journal a similar sentiment but now I can just say "Yeah, that" thanks to your help. <3

It is sad to see characters you love go away, but I try to focus less on that, and more on the fact that they had their chance to make an impression at all. And sometimes we're forced with the sad reality that we must instead mourn the player and be thankful for their contributions.

I am guilty of this, and I feel bad about it.

I buy adopts because I love the design and/or species, then fall back into getting art of the same handful of characters every time I get a commission.

But I'm trying to do better!  I haven't adopted any new characters in ages, and I'm making a point of giving neglected characters attention when getting art recently

I'll admit I'm guilty of buying adopts and not using them like I should, most of it really is I spread myself thin and I'm trying to do better on not adopting more than I ought to in the future and just make new characters in the future. Money is kinda a weird situation where I adopt a character rather than spending that money on characters I already have and I hate myself for it.

I get where you're coming from too though because there have been characters I absolutely adored that just go unused. I see people who have never posted a single thing in their entire gallery and I find myself kinda... embittered by it? They buy all these adopts and never once use their gallery unless it's to resell the character a week later, usually at the same price and/or a markup even when they didn't really get much more art for it. Which is why I vow that a character I buy stays with me unless I truly have a reason to resell. I absolutely loathe seeing people buy a million characters only to resell shortly after. I dunno maybe I'd rather just die by that. If there's one thing I can praise myself for though is that I do give most of these characters stories so it's not like they go completely unused, they just... don't really get to be public I suppose.

On the other hand though, no one is obligated to anything I suppose. One reason I kinda stopped posting was because I kept getting some weird fucking people demanding I use my characters in stuff they wanted and it got to a point to where I didn't enjoy posting stuff I got for myself, for others to see.

I completely get where you're coming from though, as someone who's been on both sides of the spectrum.

Pretty much this is the sentiment I have yeah.

Like Eclypse said further up, its nice the artists are paid for their work, but ... yeah. Its a bit of a waste. At least you're taking care of your bebes

I started to buy adoptables to support artists while still getting something new in return. Commissions would usually take very long and sometimes the artist would go on months taking more and more commissions without giving an update, so adopts seemed like a good way to avoid that.

But it has kind of become an addiction now 😭 I have too many characters and I just keep getting more when I see a design I love.
Balmung

I think there's very different kinds of adopts.

There's "Here, I made this new colorful tiger" sort, which I think is what you're speaking about. There exist good ones but many are quite generic.

And there's "I need to pay my cat's vet bills, so I'm selling a well used character that already had a well crafted story and a dozen pictures". For those it's indeed unfortunate to see them be unused.
Zoichi
I buy both of those kinds of adopts 😭
Although I usually have the policy that if the original owner wants them back I'm willing to sell/trade them, except in cases where I've had the owner buy it back just to sell them again at a higher cost -_-

I don't adopt characters for this reason.  I'm not an artist so the best I could do is use the character in a story I write and I prefer to create my own characters for my stories.  With very few exceptions, all of the characters you see in my gallery are characters I've created and commissioned an artist to draw for me.

i have a few characters i bought but never used, mostly because a story i was working for them didn't work, and art is pretty expensive for something I am not 100% sure on :(

I might just put all the characters i don't use often enough up as a free for all, and anyone has permission to use them, might do anyway.

You could just send a message and see if they're okay with it, or they could ask for some way to make them happy like not crediting them for the picture.

IMO, however, a sale is a sale. You paid for them, you deserve to get something useful for your money.

I certainly understand and can relate to a lot of the observations here. Personally speaking, I started with getting adopts because I wasn't sure what kinds of characters I wanted to work with, and I didn't have confidence in my ability or vision to come up with something unique for an artist to work with. However, to prevent myself from overdoing it, I set three rules to avoid many of the things people here have mentioned.

1. I set a hard limit on the number of adopts I'd take; once I hit it, that'd be the end of it. After that, only custom-designed OCs, and only if they reached a point where I might want to do art with them.

2. I'd only take on an adopt if I felt like they would fit into the narrative of what I was doing with my other characters (how would they interact with my other floofs? What kinky and non-kinky themes or topics can I explore with them?). There were also considerations, such as personal preferences and biases, that played a factor (species, coloration, theme, etc.), but they still had to fit in.

3. I'd rotate which characters receive art (be it in a comm, YCH, or whatever) so that the love is spread around fairly. That's why I set a limit for myself upfront on adoptions, so I could still manage to feature my characters while not breaking the bank. I actually keep a list of that where I tally that kinda stuff.

The rules do help keep me grounded; like I am at my limit of adopts and haven't gotten anymore since, and I'm quite happy with all the characters I have picked up and they all mesh well in the world I have set for them. But it did help that I wanted to have a meta-narrative for them to fit within.

The biggest challenges I have now are making sure I don't favor my first adopts (my otter-snep twins) too much with art (Kinda failing at that >.>). Additionally, I'm working on overcoming my anxiety about posting what I've created; I get super self-conscious about coming across as too wordy or boring with my submissions (like character sheets) and don't post them.

Eh. I don't really think to hard about it. If any of my OCs suddenly disappeared, nobody is gonna miss them.

I had gotten an adopt once cuz the design was cute and I wanted to draw him, and I still do.  I just have anxiety and depression which makes it hard for me to draw if real world issues are getting me down.  Add in ADHD, and it's a wheel spin what I'm in the mood to do after my daily obligations are done.

I used to have a particularly well-known OC which I got rid of. People change. We are constantly growing and our worlds change. It's no surprise that the fictional characters we used to associate with ourselves don't grow with us. Sometimes we all ned to throw out old clothes.

Unused adopts are a bummer for artists too sometimes. I have one I sold on IB like 3 years ago that was purchased by someone for their friend. The person who bought it has been inactive for a year and a half, and the friend has been inactive for three years, and never even uploaded it. I wish I'd kept it for myself, cause I love the design, or knew if the person who technically owns it even exists anymore. Like, if it's basically ownerless, I'd like him back plz! Someone please use him! He's so cute!

There's a stego adopt one of my fav artists did years ago that I absolutely ADORE with every fiber of my being. The person who owns it has at least uploaded it to their folder, but seemingly they've never done a single thing with it, and they own dozens and dozens of other characters besides that they've *also* never done anything with- and all of them were quite pricey too. Like.... why? All the gorgeous designs just rotting. T_T Edit: Nope, scratch that, they don't even have it up on their page anymore. It's just gone into the void now I guess! ;_;

I'm guilty of the latter, tbh.  Sometimes I adopt a character with plans on how they fit into my lore, and then later on it just doesn't work out the way I had initially anticipated, sadly.

As for your former point, there are definitely some people I miss dearly, one in particular who I'm not going to name here as they would likely prefer it that way.  Sadly lots of friends who we hope are still okay, even though we may never know.  It sucks for us, but all we can do is hope...right?

The... sudden disappearance of a prominent character is something I think about from time to time. While not often, I do think about those that give little to no explanation towards the neglect or outright change to a character since there are possibilities that there's a more... worrisome reason for the sudden change, but sadly I never go further than reflect as I don't wish to bothers about it as a total stranger.

Thematically speaking, a very popular one of mine is what I believe to be more of a reflection of my mental health and worldview for the small part of the world that I allow "him" to be featured in. So when that factor changed during the years, for better or for worse, so did... Well, his existence. If I had the budget, I would show the extension of that same reflection through the little skunk critter that has now taken center stage.
