question for commissioners (past, present, future)

Do you like cheaper, looser/messier and less detailed commissions being an available option?

I ask because as of right now my wing-its are fairly detailed and relatively polished (although my art style is still more of a sketchy nature than it is super clean and sharp) and while i plan to continue offering these, i am wondering if much less refined work for a lower price would be more exciting/accessible to more people who still want to commission artwork.

my main hiccup here is that sometimes just figuring out a pose that works and looks good is what takes me a considerable amount of time, so they wouldnt be *dirt* cheap ever, but im thinking in the $50-$60 per character zone (also wing-it rules, not custom).  The style would be something like this:

I like the option for broke bastards like me to be able to see their ideas realized, but I also understand that it can be more desirable to have more finished/polished commissions coming in as an artist. I'd simply assume that those pay better per-hour than sketches at least!

more detailed works definitely do pay more per hour in general but sometimes it really depends. there are times where doing detail work on some pieces takes longer than expected for a silly reason (usually just me trying to be a perfectionist i think). sometimes, looser drawings tend to look better as looser drawings too imo. so im really considering at least trying this and seeing how it feels for me.

I am rooting for you. Art is 100% about experimenting and trying new things and I feel like that growth extends to making a career out of a passion, too.

I haven't been a commissioner, but I like your thought. In this economy anything goes!

I like having the option just in case I want to save money so cheaper options are always nice to have around I'd say.

Options are always nice, and I do like this idea.

I think a cheaper option that's less work on your end as well would be good. The important thing is not putting so many hours into it that it's not worth it. :3

yeah. its something i would need to test out before making it an official part of my usual rotation

I prefer it often as it lets me get more of my ideas out into the world or tell stories easier with multiple pictures rather than just one.

cheaper isn't necessarily bad. it opens up the way for bulk when that's what one desires.

While I have done this topic to death in my art career, I am one who is still guilty of over detailing and over committing to a project. When I commit to it. Often  35-60$ commission magically becomes a soft shade or full render and a lot fo work I put into that I ended up doing for no extra cost.

Maybe it's fixation, maybe it's just me. Even if I tell myself never do work I'm not paid to do... Uh... oops!

Like many others have said, as a commissioner, having the option is nice. It allows the commissioner to have less financial investment if they want to something like, say, experiment with a new character and see how an artist draws them. Then, if they like the result, they could be more inclined to get a higher-tier commission next time because the artist has shown that they draw the person's character well.

Pricing aside, that sketchy style is pretty fun, IMO.

I actually prefer and like sketchier stuff most of the time, so having this a option would be nice :)

Yeah, definitely! I have a few adopts that I've been wanting more art of, but not anything big or detailed. So an option like this would be great!

I think more options is always a good thing. Being able to flex slightly to the needs or wants of a potential customer, who otherwise couldn't afford the commission, I would think would be a boon.
So yes, having the slightly cheaper option sounds good to me.

I dig skethier stuff like this a lot so I'd definitely enjoy having that as a comm option for sure

I am good either way, if you do make this a tier it may mean I get more art from you.

Generally doesn't hurt to have more options.

Honestly, I only recently realized that the wing-it quality had gone up when the price did, a lot of things that were wing-its I had assumed were custom comms when I saw them posted cause the polish was higher than the old school wing-its. That was one reason I had been a little hesitant to jump on board. Though I might be interested in a wing-it in the near future :3
