While you are correct that they were playing with fire given FAs authoritative staff, gender may as well be binary. Even amongst intersex individuals, you can usually tell which binary option is more prevalent, i.e someone will look like a woman despite claiming to be otherwise and vice versa. However, I do agree that in terms of art, there should be more than just the two IRL binary options

You can be and identify anything you want. Sex is a spectrum, where it's more than just XX or XY, and many people have different changes in their body from external stimuli. They are able to change to become more feminine or masculine from their birth. They can adjust parts of their body to become more feminine or masculine. "Ah yes, this wrist is feminine, you must be a female!" doesn't work. "Ah yes, you're mostly male looking! But you have female genitals... You must be male!" Also doesn't work. Let people identify as whatever the fuck they want. It hurts no one. Let people change their body how they want, it hurts no one.

You're right, people can *identify* however they see fit. Though that unfortunately won't change a persons true biological characteristics. Even with medication, even with surgery, they'll be the same :( By looking at the bone structure or even something as simple as a persons mannerisms (IRL), you can tell a lot about them including their biological sex which helps defines their gender. But again, they can identify as anything they'd like.

It's hard for some people to hear things like their fantasies are wrong again and again. It becomes easy to internalize the constant feedback of "X and Y is immoral and you're immoral," as a truth. And so "Yes I am immoral and my purpose is to make you angry and there is nothing you can do about it" becomes a defensive personality to adopt. You know, the old hurt people hurt people loop. This is one of those.
