Peppermint oil steam. Last week, my bronchitis flared up to where I had to go to a health clinic. The doctor prescribed me some antibiotics and checked to be sure it didn't go into my lungs and cause pneumonia. The doctor is a woman from Jamaica. She told me of a remedy people on the islands use to break up phlegm, and it clears sinus congestion. She said boil a small pot of water with 20 or 30 drops of peppermint oil with a pinch of thyme, then breathe in the steam. Don't breathe it up close. Peppermint oil is very potent. Fan the steam toward you will your hands in a paddling motion. And do not drink it. It's not for international oral use. This is not to be confused with peppermint extract. You need pure peppermint oil. Most health food stores carry it. You can also use a tea kettle, but be careful it doesn't have a boil over. If you decide to use a tea kettle, remove the kettle from the burner once it starts whistling and turn the burner down to #2 setting. Then wait a minute or two before placing the kettle back on the burner. When I tried it, I was surprised how well it works on bronchitis and sinus congestion.
