Quitting

Hey everyone,
I am here to announce that I will be working towards retiring from doing art.
At least NSFW digital art.

Why?

The last drop
Because in the last two months, people have been failing to pay.
Yes, I handle a payment when work is done model. But in 20 years of doing this?
That has never been an issue.

In these last two months, just before the holidays,
people have gone radio silent on me or sending me messages with sob stories on why they can't pay while I'm actually going bankrupt over their spending behavior being beyond their financial ability. Making their poor habits my issue.
Yes, I don't believe the sob stories because at least 7 people are in the hospital and surprisingly 3 of them have exactly the same cancer.
WHAT A COINCIDENCE.
Starting to wonder if you guys are in the same ward, having tea over my worries on how to make it through this month.
Either way, if you can send me pm's with little sad stories? You can navigate to paypal and pay me.
(yes, I know over the years several of you had honest issues with paying and that's fine, but of all these now there's one person with a honest reason I believe.. guess what they are not in the hospital either)

Luxury spending and Ai
About a year ago Ai art generaters became much more widely available and I saw a huge drop in both customers here and basically all my business clients moved to Ai generated imagery.
This meant I lost about 80% of my income.

Combine this with the fact that we all have a lot less spending money,
and besides the fact that this means the customers left comission art way less.
I also feel guilty.
I want you to spend your money on more important things than pornographic art.
I want you to make sure you have all your ducks in a row and don't dig your self into depths everywhere, especially as Trump is coming up and I don't see that going well for normal people.(no matter what his voters believe, we've been here before remember.)

Simply said
Online, digital media, illustrated NSFW art is dying for many reasons...
and it's simply no longer worth the stress and struggle to get commissions, to get things out there, to get customers, to get traffic, to get not payed in the end because 'woopsy daisy I spend the money for this commission but let's just tell them I'm dying and it be alright'.

I'm done, I set out as a teenager to make a living doing art.
I did it and I saw it die.
I saw my own love for drawing absolutely burn up and I am done.

What now?
Well, the next few moths I will be working towards transitioning to other ways of making money.
So if you want anything art wise from me...get it. I am out of here in probably 3 months.

I'm sorry for all the people that do honestly enjoy my art.
And I will try to find motivation somewhere to finish the commissions in my inbox.
But leave me some moments to grieve over basically the loss of this.

Realizing that it's over,
my teenage dream is an embryonic leftover of Voldemort and the train station and I am taking a different train... because I'm done trying to make this work.

*hugs* I know that this decision is not a light one I always enjoyed your art.
I hope that someday your passion for art rekindles and that AI art isn´t an issue for anybody anymore

I've heard more people not paying.
it's why I do a sketch preview, then nothing more until payment, model.
Never had issues myself.

That aside, I'm sad to see you go yet again.
I was too busy to even a lot of work from you.

Will be sad to see you go. Really loved your art. I know you were doing the pay when its done thing, but Violet's method seems to work for her, and most other creators. Maybe try switching to that before deciding to quit? Either way IF you do go I hope you at least leave your gallery up for us to continue to enjoy.

I appreciate your art still. I am sorry that others have ruined the joy you get for drawing. I am happy for the pieces you have created for me.

There's nothing wrong with asking for payment, say once a sketch is approved. Most artists I've commissioned do it this way. As for AI art, the interest will fade. I personally liked the detailed fur in many generated images, but many people have turned to flat, bland generations with no fur whatsoever and none of that holds a candle to the art that came before, I think.

As for the rest, it seems clear you need to step away, but I hope it's not forever.

That is unfortunate.

Why don't you charge upfront, though? Most artists do.

You also shouldn't feel guilty over doing a luxury service. There are people who have enough spare cash that commissioning pictures won't make their lives any different. Some indeed have terrible priorities, but that's of their own doing and you not taking their money will just mean they'll give it to someone else.

I'm so very sorry. I understand your feelings completely, especially about non-paying clients. I don't wanna lump everyone into the same boat, because as you say, there are people who have legitimate issues. But that just smells of scammy, shitty behavior to me, and that's no way for people to treat you. And it really sucks that you've lost so much custom, too. Whatever you decide to do next, I hope it works out for you and can be somwhat, if not equally fulfilling. And I hope you can come back to art again someday, if only for your own enjoyment.

Though I have to say I agree with some of the comments above concerning luxury art. It's good of you to be concerned about people making it through the tough times ahead. But it will still land differently for different people, and if someone decides they have money to spend on luxury items like art, that's their business. As long as they pay! I'm not saying you ought to change your mind, but artists will still deserve to make a living no matter what the future holds.

95 percent of the world's population is not in Trump-land. And some of us can actually afford luxuries like art.

I have no idea how your customers are distributed, but it might not be as bad as it looks. Also it's the Christmas season, either your delinquent customers have overspent already or they are being scummy to make room for that.

Personally, I sometimes let my desires run away with my budget, but luckily I have margins enough that it doesn't prevent me from paying what I owe. That said, having too many commissions outstanding with payments on delivery does make me feel a little nervous of losing track; payment at sketch time feels better. But that's just me.

Charge money up front

I'm sorry to hear you're having a hard time with deadbeats. I agree that charging up front would be a good solution; I exclusively charge up front due to all the horror stories I've heard.

Easy fix to most of that. However if you want to quit then quit. We will all miss your art though.

Truly unfortunate news to hear.  And more upsetting about people not paying you for all the effort you put in...
As some say in the comments, it might be better to ask for payment upfront.  It would help save a lot of headaches when dealing with those wanting free art.

Still, glad to have worked with you now and then, and appreciate all the art you've done for me.

This is utterly devastating to hear - I'm genuinely just, so very upset at this news. I'm so, so sorry. You're such a bright, beautiful, shining superstar, Swelter.

I'm sad to hear you're leaving us. I've always enjoyed your work, and with this new job I was finally able to start commissioning more artwork and work with more artists. I was thrilled to finally be able to have you breathe life into my characters. I do hope that you will consider some of the suggestions made above before leaving 100%, or at least remain open for SFW things, but I understand. It's REALLY hard to put the time in to things you aren't passionate about, especially if it's something that once fueled your passion. You were an absolute doll to work with, and if we don't have the opportunity to work together again, then I wish you all the best with whatever you decide to do.

I am so sorry to hear your decision and for your reasons.  I really do hope you reconsider though.  I understand why you're frustrated though.  I think if you changed up how you do things though it would help a lot.  Like others pointed out, you could take money upfront instead.  Either way you decide I wish you luck :(

Damn... that is horrible
Art is my main income as well and I charge upfront to avoid that problem, but I can understand that feeling when a client suddenly disappears. Sometimes it is for a genuine reason and sometimes is harder to accept/believe, but it happens
It will be sad seeing you go though... you could at least do arts on your own when you recover your passion, one art every now and then while you work on something else, but I get it doesn't look like a possibility now. All I can say is, try not giving up on art, even if you're not making money out of it, it is a good hobby to have once you recover from a burnt out
In any case, I wish you luck on whatever you try to do now

well, that sucks.
I've confronted the mods in the past about AI art and they accused me of being "entitled" after stating how much work goes into our art, So we at least now know where we stand in the eyes of the moderators.

As I've said to you before, Your always welcome to have a go at the voice-acting thing, You not replying to my last message  should be a hint, but I'm so desperate these days I've gotta try my luck x___x

Man, that just really sucks. I rather miss a meal than not pay for something I got. Ramen is always cheap. Let me know if you need anything

this is why i always charge before working.

and frankly...i share your sentiment, i am so disappointed of the community today, I HAVE MANY FRIENDS HERE, REALLY COOL PEOPLE,  but the community itself has become so mainstream, empty and twitter like, frankly i am too old for it. I WILL CONTINUE MAKING FURRY COMMISSION ART, but out of the community. maybe i only keep this account, honestly, inkbunny is way more friendly and less mainstream than fur affinity.

sorry, but too many noobs pretending to be furries just because they suck at online gaming or are too geek to be anime otakus.

i hate to see artists leaving, but i do totally understand why they take that route.

Well, that's pretty sad, because I DO like your art style and I REALLY appreciate your speed. :-(

I also really liked NOT to have to pay upfront and get art 1 year later (or never).
For me I encountered a couple of furry artists over the years, that ghosted med after the payment.
Some are active on this side as well - under a different username - but the old account was just a friend, they helped with regarding the sketches, that's why the art looks so similar - hue hue - sure...

Sadly the times are changing. People will get bored of AI after a time. While i do make AI stuff, i prefer traditional art. I also have never really felt the need or want to get art commissioned. I did support someone for a time, but they evengually changed thier style and moved on from the characters i loved. So i guess there is that too. People change. It is sad that this has happened, i wish you the best on your next endevour

Sorry to hear people are being dicks. There is really no other way to put it. People that refuse payment are taking advantage of your kindness, and are just assholes.

I hope that things, no matter how they work out, work out for your stability.

AI art is conceptually impressive, but it just lacks any real attraction for me. The styles of artists are reason I follow and look to try to commission them. Most of the styles I love are less detailed than the common generated things, but they have the qualities I actually enjoy.

I don't know if you still love the process, but if you do, I hope you can still do art for you.

I'm really sorry to hear that you've had that happen to you, and I understand and respect your decision to do what's best for yourself because of it. I regret not getting art from you prior to this announcement; I'm going to have to see about getting something from you before you turn to safer projects!

Frankly a 50-50 model seems to be the best option, force people to pay 50% before work starts/post-sketch, and the 50% on completion that way you still get *something* out of it. I've had too many failures from artists from paying upfront and getting nothing so I can understand the opposite side of the situation from a customer's standpoint.

That being said it's a shame you have to deal with this, love your art but I understand sometimes stuff happens and I hope the best for you in your future endeavors, maybe you could do a sale every once in a while to prevent completely moving off of commissions?

Hate to see you go, but in the future I can only suggest to collect payment up front. Most of the time an artist will provide me with a sketch(however rough) and then payment is required to move forward.

Even RL we collect payment up front after providing a proposal/layout. Doesn't matter if that's 5k or 50k. Payment up front to cover labor+materials is a minimum. Have we lost business doing that? Sure, on occasion, but we also have people come back after checking around.

I noticed an uptick in that kind of behavior in some of the communities over the years. Started charging up front for new clients, and had someone actually pay for two pieces and then ghost on the third.

I think there's something in the water tbqh.

I always enjoy seeing your art pop up in my queue. It's adorable as all heck, and you can't replace that with cheap AI-generated knockoff.

All I can say is sorry for being one of the Assholes that made you feel this way -_- ...If I could do it all different I would -_- . Hopfully someday you'll come back and do your amazeing art again. I hope you you will. But in the mean time, good luck with what you wind up doing n_n <3 .

I would just start charging upfront, was hoping to get another piece from you after the holidays and it would be a shame not to be able to again.
