The minimum age of marriage in Japan is 16 for girls and that requires parental permission. Otherwise it's 18.

The first time any legal standard was set, in the 19th century, it was set as 15 for women and 17 for men.

The reference I had missed a change in 2022: It's now 18 full stop and parental permission is never relevant, before then you needed permission until you were 20, (it had the change in the age of majority but not the change in the marriage law itself).

Note that in the US, barring a specific state law saying otherwise, the old English common law standard of 12 for girls and 14 for boys still stands. Four states do not have such a law.

Perhaps this 12/14 was what i was informed with and the source where may have been unclairified but I am 100% that in the source i seen, that there was 12+ that can marry in japan. I thought this seemed a bit fishy but never got to research it.

What you may have come across was references to things that went on pre-Meiji or even pre-Shogunate. Once you hit about the mid-19th century, it isn't a big deal that a particular nation allowed young teens or even preteens to get married.

The past couple of centuries has seen a general increase in the minimum age for both sex and marriage and also an increase in the number of places with formal laws on the matter, (so it was often legal... but you still had to find officials willing to actually do it¹). Very young marriages also commonly involved arranged marriages within royalty and nobility and didn't really mean anything on a personal level until the mid-teens or so.

1: Or go with a common law marriage that may or may not be legally recognized should push come to shove.

I honestly have made a game of over-censoring my works on pixiv. Where each work gets increasingly censored, which over time will get into unreasonable places.

Japan has the same issue as the US and other places. Old antiquated laws that restrict people's rights, and don't represent the current state of the country, or the people that reside there. Tho, Japan even more so in this particular instance. We hope that as a new generation of political figures find themselves in positions to actually affect good change. That they will.
