Heard About a Really Messed Up Cyber Viruse from 3 Years Ago

At a Denny's a few nights ago, I was in a conversation with someone I know about cyber viruses.
The person I was talking with told me about the time a friend of his accidentally clicked on a virus pop-up three years ago.
He said what the virus did was erase the Windows operating system off his friend's laptop, and downloaded a DOS operating system in its place...like the operating system PCs had before Windows was introduced.
How messed up is that?

well i unpulged it from the modem to stop all the downlodes  but it jamed it so bad i could not do any thing with it  :/  it was like fook , i ended you taking it back to the plase i bout it and well after the owner tec played with it and seeing all the crap that was on it he took out a hammer and smashed it , i was like "wat thaa",, he told me to go over to this diplay and pick out any laptop i wanted  i told him i cant aford it he told me  its ok its payed for   0_o    yeah i got a way better laptop and it was worth more than my other ,,

About 8 years ago, I myself accidentally clicked on a virus that deceitfully looked like it was officially from Firefox.
The only thing my laptop would do after that was play a Bosley hair restoration commercial over and over again.

It cost me $100 to get a tech to straighten it out.

One of my sisters had said, between a laptop that picked up a virus and a laptop that was drop kicked, she'd rather have the one that was drop kicked.
Her reasoning was...With a laptop that was drop kicked, a tech can go through it, find the broken parts, and replace those broken parts.
But with a laptop that picked up a virus, there's no telling what a virus writer did to it. A lot of those viruses have a back door, which means a virus could come back after a tech thought he had cleared it.
