I do not know if this is still the way, But I made an account on the e-hentai Forums and made a post in the test subforum. From that point, so long as I was logged into e-hentai's forums, I was able to slip the x in.
Supposedly there is a plugin that helps you do this but I have not needed or used it.

I used to have a guide saved from Reddit but it might be gone. From what I remember make sure you're using Chrome and get the sad panda extension. Log into e-hentai and play the little web game for about 30minutes. It has to do with a certain amount of activity on the website and then exhentai should be unlocked for you in 3 days or so. If it ever becomes a grey screen again just repeat process on e-hentai.
