Fuck Google

Alright so, Youtube rant incoming:

I'm a Firefox user. You may have heard by now how google was caught purposely sabotaging video load times with an artificial delay if they detect that you're using Firefox. Well lately, I've been having other issues. I couldn't rule out that it was my shitty ISP not playing well with Youtube, which is certainly true, but the issues just kept coming. I would have videos skip ahead 10 seconds randomly all throughout. Backing up the video would do one of two things. It would either skip that same segment again, or endlessly buffer until I refresh. Sometimes videos wouldn't load at all, but that one could be either Youtube or my ISP, it's hard to tell sometimes. The other big issue I was having was when I watched a short, it would CONSISTENTLY get a few seconds in, and then the video would freeze, while the sound kept going. I'd have to refresh to get the video to play properly.

So, the other day, the skipping issue was getting WAY worse than it has ever been. Frustrated, I was looking for solutions. I kept skipping over the ones that kept mentioning the artificial delay issue because.. pff.. there's no way that's related, right? Out of options, I installed User-Agent Switcher and Manager on firefox, and set it to spoof a Chrome Browser. For the past couple of days, I've been viewing Youtube with this setting.

The difference is night and day -.-

The skipping issue is almost gone. I had one video this morning skip a second or two, and backing it up just once played the entire segment it had skipped over previously. Otherwise, everything's been running smoothly. And that freezing issue on shorts? GONE! It's not happening any more! Youtube is running more smoothly on my machine now than it ever has. NOTHING CHANGED except the firefox browser I've been using this whole time is now announcing itself to Youtube as "Yep, I'm totally a Chrome browser. 100% not Firefox."

If it was just the artificial delay, it would have been annoying, but I could have dealt with that since my ISP sucks anyway, but the other issues were causing me to have to use third party downloaders to watch a video in its entirety until now. So fuck you, Google. Stop trying to bully me into using that shit browser of yours because now I'm even more determined to cling to ANYTHING ELSE.

Update: Oh... my... god...

It works... And here was me just thinking it was my internet not liking me anymore. (They put the change in about the same time I changed office)

My internet NEVER liked me, so it was always difficult to tell if an issue was Youtube or Viasat, but seems there's no room to wonder on that one any more. *throws things*

Thanks for the tip. My internet is a fair weather friend. Literally. If it's stormy it's cr@9, if it's clear its good(ish).

yeah, youtubes been that way since the ad blocker blocker crap. Honestly, I dumped Firefox ages ago for getting political. I'd actually recommend using the Brave Browser. It's got built in ad blockers that kept up well during their blocker war; and is built entirely around your privacy. And since then I've had no issues with the site, outside of obvious ads on the shorts vanishing as they tried to start playing. The delay you are experiencing is no doubt a side effect of google/youtube using malicious software and maybe even malware to read your browser to check for ad blockers. Seeing as Crome has dropped all support for ad blockers i doubt the site even scrutinizes a browser it detects is Crome; that makes since as an after the fact; making youtube think you are a crome user and performance improved

Brave is sounding more interesting, and yeah it always seems like Firefox is playing catchup with how google keeps changing how things work. Before that it was the best browser. Also delays weren't the issues I was having. The delays were negligible compared to what I was already experiencing with my internet provider, not just on Youtube. No, the issues I've been having on Youtube are videos doing odd things bordering on making them completely unwatchable.

With all the ruckus about this whole 'destroy your ad-blocker you sub-humanistic number zero' behavior running rampant lately, it is an absolute headache. Also, many thanks for recommending Brave! 😁

not a problem it is a really good browser, and as far as I've seen, it kept up real well during their active blocker war; and now if they are doing something I've noticed nothing on my end =3

I noticed recently Google did away with the cache option to look back on past info on current sites.

So I use Firefox, but I am also on Youtube Premium because I use it enough for entertainment at work to make the cost worth it. I also listen to more than just music on it. But I didnt have your issues, and nobody else here in the house has your issues. Nobody else here has Youtube Premium either, but they all use Firefox. They just get ads.

I have none of the problems you talk about. Videos load fine, they play fully all the way through, there is no loading delay. I keep my video codecs up to date, as well as my video drivers, so you are either having a codec / driver issue, or Youtube is being intentionally made shitty to get you on Premium. If the second one is the case, then its happening everywhere and not just on Firefox. Since you are still having issues with skipping sections of video, I am going to assume its a codec issue or you have an extension on your browser that is causing issues with playback, and what you are using to spoof a Chrome I.D. is making it play nicer with Google's video codecs.

If my codecs were the problem, then wouldn't just spoofing a Chrome browser not solve the issue? Because it certainly seems it did! Also is anyone else in your place using ad blocks?

Sounds like your issues aren't totally solved, just lessened, if youre still getting skips in the video that make you need to back the video up. And yes, basically everyone in the house is using adblockers, uBlock Origin to be exact, except for those running Youtube on a gaming console or smart tv. Something similar started happening with my GF after an update to the adblocker borked some custom parameters the adblocker was using. It was essentially trying to block ads "wrong" which caused hang-ups and terrible buffering.

Since your browser is reading as Chrome, then maybe it is allowing the player to bypass such blockers.

I have exclusively used Firefox. I'll try disabling all my adblockers, Noscript, and Privacy Badger and see if I get bad performance too.

I got one skip since spoofing, and it happened when the video loading stalled, as it does sometimes on satellite internet, and backing up made it play fully. But as I said, the difference is night and day. Before spoofing the Chrome browser, this was happening on almost every video in multiple places, and backing up NEVER solved the problem. I'm not exaggerating when I say never. I mean it never solved it. Before the spoof, every time I backed up the video, it would refuse to load or it would skip again in the same place. Also EVERY short that I tried to watch would freeze when I first watched it. This hasn't happened once since the spoof. So no, I'm not having the same issues or even similar, and the only thing that changed was youtube thinks I'm on Chrome now. I don't know what's different with your setup, but with others telling me they've experienced the same massive difference in quality, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's not the codecs.
