Scammed Too Many Times...

I have now been scammed three times by 'artists' in the past year who have come to me directly in notes or DMs on FA and Twitter, asking for me to give them a chance to draw for me. I did my due diligence and checked on their accounts - ensured they weren't created yesterday, checked the quality of their works and its consistency, confirmed some sort of stable release posting schedule, etc. Even though everything checked out, the moment money transferred hands/accounts, I either got ghosted or I got a product that was so subpar in quality and nowhere near the standard they advertised going into the transaction. In fact, the latest one basically traced parts of my previous commissions to make a 'new' one and it was obvious. Now, I must begin the laborious Paypal refund process to reclaim what I lost for each one, and it's frustrating.

To that end, I am making a decision going forward about commissions I make: Unless you are a known artist I'm aware of by name, or if I'm currently watching you (thus showing interest to one day commission), I will not be accepting 'cold call' DMs or notes from people asking me to commission them. I've been burned enough times now that the answer will always be no. I'm sorry if that sucks for actual real, new artists who are just trying to get their foot in the door, but I simply can't take that chance anymore.

Hope everyone understands my position, and you all have an awesome day and keep enjoying the art I get and post! Follow the artists I support! They're all deserving of your attention!

Good artists don't need to ask for commissions. People commission artists on their own. It's extremely rude for an artist to try to get commissions this way, and good artists don't do this. Scams like this have become fairly common. It's best to just not reply and block them if necessary. Sad as it is, it's just how people are now.

It is very sad. Sometimes I'm too nice and I wanted to give them a chance. Sadly, I won't anymore, even if they are legit.

Yeah when I want (can afford) I will reach out to the artist in question

I understand your view. I've had many artists come to me on discord from random servers asking for me to commission them. I'll usually ignore them. Some I've had fun with before saying no.

When I comm artists, I'll either already be following them and want to get art from them, or I'll have friends tell me that they can be trusted. I've never gotten a comm done from an artist who's come to me asking if they can make something for me

That's a good idea too - friend reviews.

Wait, you're getting people coming to you to make art?
I've never heard of such a thing, except from people who hound others for money, similar to people who harass old ladies for work only to a quick and crappy job, take the money and bounce. Some don't even finish the job. Also the fake Windows Customer Service.

Not to downplay your situation, it reminds me of those situations.

Yep, guess because I commission a lot, I've become a target now. Well, no more. I won't be accepting such solicitations now just on principle.

Some people really have nothing better to do with their life

Damn, sorry to hear this, I hope you get your money back. Even legit artists should never directly message someone asking for commissions, IMO, and in the general etiquette and conduct of commissioning artists. It's so rude.
